Economic Reforms Are Making the Rich Richer and the Poor Poorer - Peterside
If you ask a rich man, he will tell you the current reforms are working because he is getting richer. The concern should be for the 140 million Nigerians who are getting poorer.

When A Revered Emir Spoke Raw Truth To Power & Its Lieutenants
"You are the ones in power, but you have forgotten the common people. Politics has become selfishness, not service."
"Every 4 years you come to my palace with cap in hand, asking for prayers, asking for support. After election, you disappear to Abuja, to Lagos. You don't come back until next election. Is palace voting center or toilet that you visit only when pressed?"
"In my days, politics was about community. Now politics is about one man, his son, his wife, his bank account. You call it Renewed Hope, but people in Katsina are in renewed hunger."
"You are fighting each other in APC - Governor Dikko Radda vs former Governor Masari vs former Governor Aminu Bello Masari supporters vs Abuja boys. All fighting for 2027 ticket while bandits are in Batsari, in Jibia, in Safana killing people. Is that not selfishness? Your people are dying, you are fighting for ticket."
"In my Emirate, 52 schools closed because of bandits - same number Doka mentioned in his article. Farmers cannot go to farm in 12 LGAs. People pay N10m, N20m ransom to Turji and his boys. And you come to me talking about DG campaign for Tinubu 2027? Should you not be talking about DG security for Katsina 2026?"
"Where is Bello Turji? You promised to handle security. Turji is in forest 100km from here. Go and bring him, then come and campaign."
"If You Are Selfish, People Will Be Selfish With Their Votes".
"If you do politics of selfishness - only for your family, your cronies, your contacts - then people will also do politics of selfishness. They will collect your rice and vote against you. They will collect your N5,000 and still vote for who they want. Because you taught them selfishness."
"In 2023, you brought rice, you brought money, but Katsina people still split votes. In 2027, if you bring same selfish politics, they will collect but not vote you."

Nigeria’s Passport Plunges From 90th To 181st Position. Visa-Free Access Falls From 44 Destinations To 24
Nigeria’s passport has reportedly dropped to 181st out of 196 countries in the latest IziVisa Passport Ranking Index, down from 90th position in July 2026.
According to data published on IziVisa.com, Nigerians can travel to 24 countries visa-free, obtain visas on arrival in 16 countries and access 43 countries through electronic visas.
The report highlights a decline in Nigeria’s visa-free score from 44 destinations in July to 24 in the latest IziVisa ranking.
IziVisa explained that passports are ranked according to the number of destinations their holders can access without obtaining a visa beforehand, including visa-free entry, visas on arrival and electronic visas.
The United Arab Emirates leads the 2026 ranking, with access to 185 of 198 destinations through the three travel categories, while Switzerland occupies second position. Luxembourg, Malta, Denmark, Spain and Finland also feature prominently.
Separately, the July 2026 Henley Passport Index placed Nigeria 90th out of 199 passports, with visa-free access to 44 destinations. The index, published by Henley & Partners, assesses passports against 227 travel destinations using data from the International Air Transport Association.
Among African countries, South Africa ranked 49th globally, with access to 101 destinations, followed by Botswana in 61st position with 81 destinations. Morocco ranked 67th with 71 destinations, while Kenya placed 68th with 70.
Ghana ranked 70th, with access to 67 destinations, while Nigeria shared its position with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Turkmenistan in the Henley ranking.
However, the IziVisa and Henley indices use different methodologies and coverage, meaning their rankings are not directly comparable.

Nigerians Will Pay Fuel Tax When The Economy Becomes Stable — Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele
Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has said the Federal Government will introduce fuel taxes when the economy stabilises and citizens’ incomes can accommodate the extra costs.
He disclosed this in an interview with ARISE News on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, explaining that the government would first consolidate its economic reforms, restore growth and improve household earnings.
Oyedele said imposing additional levies immediately after petrol subsidy removal would have worsened Nigerians’ hardship.
“You remove subsidy, you can’t immediately impose taxes. That would be insensitive. You push the people to the wall,” he said.
The minister noted that fuel taxes account for between 20 and 80 per cent of petroleum prices in some countries, while several African nations impose multiple levies on fuel products.
He said the proposed revenue would support infrastructure and help the country prepare for future disruptions in fuel supply.
“Not because we want to impose taxes, it will be because those amounts of taxes will be dedicated into road infrastructure, they’ll be dedicated into building our fuel reserve, that can help us moderate prices of fuel products, if anything happens,” he explained.
According to Oyedele, the arrangement could also allow the government to suspend the levies temporarily when necessary to cushion the effects of market shocks.
“This is what more than 50 countries around the world, they were reducing the taxes, but we had no taxes, there was nothing to reduce,” he added.
“There has to be an order published in the gazette by the finance minister, which means we can’t do it in secret,” he said.
Oyedele maintained that the taxes would only be introduced when economic conditions improved sufficiently and Nigerians could understand the reasons for the policy and its expected benefits.

Honestly I don't think any hospital turns away medical emergencies.
The problem is Nigerians need to understand that there is a breakdown of Healthcare structure already, Referral is not neglect a patient. I'd explain
An average private hospital in Nigeria isn't equipped to handle most medical emergencies, I don't want to even talk about PHCs that should be the bedrock of Healthcare, A lot of them are Deados.
Let's use an example, A Diabetic emergency is rushed into the hospital with high glucose and they need insulin.
How many of these private hospitals even stock Insulin... in big 2026, when government isn't giving us 24/7 light, how many will stock insulin?
Of course if they see such , the only smart and wise option is to refer to another facility where they can get this care.
Were they rejected ? No. But they were directed to a place to get help
Now imagine they go to another hospital plagued with the same problem, and they also refer.. were they rejected ? No
That's what happens when there is poverty and lack of investment in healthcare.
Now let's imagine they even make their way to the hospital.
Since all the tiers of healthcare are broken down, the teaching hospitals and federal centers that should be the quarternary level of care are burdened with every simple case.
What is Malaria doing in a teaching hospital?
What is A minor laceration doing a teaching hospital?
These are cases PHCs can handle.
Oopps I forgot, most are dead.
But these teaching hospitals have no choice than to admit and care for these cases, because if they say go to a lower tier, same people will come to media and say they were rejected.
Now we have all these cases in the hospitals and beds are filled
When patients then come, where will you put patients?
Of course. There is no space and this is current situation but what will the public say. They rejected us.
If we will win. These are my proposed strategies
We need to demand the government to do better.
FIX PHCS!!!! Primary health centers will lessen a lot
Revamp existing.. I won't say create new ones. The ones that are there already are dead.
Fix the secondary and tertiary Healthcare
Mandate insurance for the whole country.
The government cannot do it alone . You need to have private public partnerships.
Fix the government hospitals
Invest in Healthcare, healthcare in Nigeria has hit a nadir, poor funding, poor remuneration, lack of personnels
These are easy fixes.
Consider investing in telemedicine.
It will solve a lot of these bottle necks.
If we don't fix it one at a time. We will keep complaining and the cycle will continue.
And people need to understand, Referral is not rejection.
Don't always think giving fluid is equivalent to saving lives.
There are emergencies that you need to get to a facility with appropriate equipments ASAP
Even the time wasted trying to salvage will kill the patient and what will the public say again?
"You know you don't have facilities and equipment. Why didn't you tell us.
You killed my Sister! "
So you see
