as uncertainty in the world increases, more important than ever to have optionality. optionality -> freedom. freedom is the biggest asset. you don't want to remove serendipity and opportunities for asymmetry. - i.e. not locking yourself into illiquid "ASSets" like real estate (unless you're buying your forever home in cash, even then you're betting on that jurisdiction & its rulers for 50+ years. don't be fooled by randomness: keep in mind the risk that your home may become totally unsellable one day as we are seeing with London leasehold properties rn). ignore the illiquid. - never take mortgages or any form of loans/debt. you're not a private equity boss bro. debt removes optionality, creating a prison for yourself, especially long-term debt as you're at the mercy of imbecilic policymakers. retail debt is extremely expensive & dangerous. - living within your means & not indulging in excess consumerism & physical belongings that tie you down or may force you to sell for scrap or take up mental bandwidth. - not locking yourself into a job that requires in-office presence and prevents location freedom. - learning and earning outside of your day job to stack extra skills/incomes to be more resistant to employment shocks given rise in AI replacement theory etc. - using the "job" as non-dilutive financing to fund your asymmetric bets (working on high-leverage projects online) & many more.

i've been VC investing since 2022. I've invested with "TiEr-OnEs", "eMErGiNg gPs", & more. I've had offers to join VC firms or even take a lot of their money & launch something. But I'm not a charlatan, it's a side quest for me. I mostly invest to have fun @ rational [.] fund
I’ve been DJing since 2018. I’ve played at clubs, small festivals, Burning Man, etc. I’m technically professional but it’s a side quest for me. I mostly play for / with friends to have fun and spread joy.

i remember once i tried to do the indie hacking thing of sharing $ wins (like a screenshot of MRR or lots of purchases coming thru) within minutes, Ali Carpet aka Tehran Tony aka Iranian Fat Tony sent me a message, telling me to delete that shit, not only cos of evil eye but the general wider consequences. & Tehran Tony is always right on these old school tings. so i listened. 🧿
Because he disclosed how much he gets from there and you know how that goes 🤷🏾‍♀️

they all went bankrupt. they would teach tech skills but not how to get a job. getting job is entirely different skillset from doing the job. so bootcamp grads started coming to the hiring accelerator i launched & i've been quietly placing them since :) 🌐rational [dot] school
i wonder what happened to the $15k coding bootcamps that were popular pre-ai lol

i observe this particularly when i walk around München or Bavarian towns. many of the natives here are so happy, zero fucks given. have job, go to job 32-35hrs per week. outside of job spend every waking second on enjoyable things: beer gardens, espressos in the sun, hiking in the alps, play sports, dinner parties, lounge around with friends, spend time with loved ones, etc etc. most don't read, let alone have awareness of AI, "future of work", "capital allocation", earning "high leverage income" or "asymmetric bets", and they couldn't give a flying fuck. could be on a different planet to me entirely. and frankly i'm envious of them. no matter how hard i try i can't function like them, that's not who i am. but the older i get the more i wish i did. i know most are happier, calmer, and have more peaceful lives. as i get older my life gets more complex with added responsibilities, and theirs is always "just the same". it's like the trite mexican fisherman story and i'm the fat american banker in the story. they have the basics covered and enjoy life, and i'm like "more more more more more"
i’ve been back home for a few days, in the tiny italian town where i grew up. maybe 6,000 people. yesterday i saw some old school friends i hadn’t seen in years and it was genuinely fascinating how little their lives have changed. most people here don’t go to university. they finish school and start working right away. then that’s kind of their life. wake up, work as an electrician or mechanic, come home, watch football, beer with friends on friday. work all year, save enough money for a week of vacation in august, come back and repeat. most have basically no idea what AI is. all the things that feel world-changing to me and to the timeline barely enter their lives at all. when i start talking about AI, self-driving cars, robots, rockets, all the things i’m insanely excited about, they mostly just scoff. completely uninterested. and i don’t even mean any of this as an insult. a lot of them seem perfectly fine with their lives. that’s what makes it so strange. their lives now feel completely foreign to mine, while also being incredibly familiar. we grew up in the same town, went to the same schools, knew the same people. our families and childhoods weren’t that different. if i had made a couple different choices when i was 14 or 15, there’s a very real chance that would have been my life too. sometimes you go home and realize just how many completely different versions of your life were only a few decisions away.

effective altruism dis, rationality dat. bruddas, let me introduce you to my definition of rationality for life & the philosophies that the rationalvc rationalfund & all rational brands were formed on:
Effective Altruism is the natural enemy of the left and right because the right doesn't believe in altruism and the left doesn't believe in effectiveness.

True wealth is total independence: you answer to nobody & no opinion or politics can dictate your future Even the richest celebrities’ careers live & die by their fanbase & whoever writes their cheques If income costs you peace or freedom, you’re rich — not wealthy.

tru dat, and on the acqui-hire point, @antoniogm wrote about this in Chaos Monkeys (AdGrok was startup he built after leaving Goldman Sachs):
This is also why the majority of nepobabies don't bother anymore with finance/consulting but rather become "founder" straight after graduation, then suddenly "serial entrepreneur" by 27. They can buy unlimited tickets for status + meaning + more money, with instant recognition from society. Why grind for 10+ years as an anonymous junior in the corporate world when you can become “Founder & CEO” overnight, speak at niche conferences, appear on your friends’ podcasts, sometimes get on TV thanks to your dad’s connections, then give advice to the young generation on LinkedIn about courage and taking risks. This might sound a bit sarcastic, but I personally know a ton of these people in Paris and London. They went into entrepreneurship not out of conviction, but because it was the safest, most socially rewarding route available to them, with an entire ecosystem of manufactured success around them: raise from "family and friends", buy some distribution, get a few press articles, acquire a handful of real clients, then do a small acqui-hire into one of the ecosystem's companies and suddenly call yourself an "Ex-founder" or put “Exit to...” in the bio. There is literally no downside for them. Even failing 5 startups makes them a "repeat entrepreneur" and they can still try a 6th time, and who knows, they might get lucky once, then explain to everyone that failures were part of the journey and that they had this incredible tenacity to keep going through the down moments. It just makes the story better.

that is how silicon valley runs, but always remind yourself:
Silicon Valley is full of bullshitters and runs entirely through connections. > Come from an upper class family > Get connections through EA community to work in FTX with SBF > then get some more connections to work in OpenAI with 0 technical relevance > write yet-another fear-mongering essay to create sensation and pretend you are sacking yourself for benefit of humanity > pocket millions of dollars in fees and act so reckless that you don't have risk management for your portfolio stocks going down %20 > profit If you are doing honest work, do not be afraid to be bold and get the things you need to build the future. World is full of scammers who get there with 0 value creation.
