My full review of #Digger: Its ideas can overwhelm its characters, its satire frequently strains from being overemphasised, and its emotional remove makes a lengthy journey feel even more demanding. Still, ambition this unapologetic is worth acknowledging.theaureview.com/watch/film-r…
#Digger…well, it’s not a musical. There are great performances here (Cruise, Goodman, Ahmed specifically) and it has something to say, but whether or not it says it successfully is another thing. It’s perhaps a bit too on the nose, and oh how general audiences will hate it!
Before talking about #Mayday, I couldn’t help but ask Kenneth Branagh about directing Michelle Pfeiffer in MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS; “So, this is a movie star.”
Out of Toronto this year I had the pleasure of sitting down with Kenneth Branagh to talk about #Mayday and surrendering to its playful nature. theaureview.com/watch/interv…
#HappilyEverAfter is a warm, perceptive drama about two sisters discovering that adulthood offers considerably fewer certainties than they were promised. #TIFF theaureview.com/watch/happil…
To coincide with the release of #Primetime, I had the pleasure of speaking to Robert Pattinson about what drew him to the project and why he ultimately chose to star in the film after initially only signing on as a producer. theaureview.com/watch/interv…
Lance Oppenheim has crafted a gripping, darkly funny psychological thriller in #Primetime (@A24), one that feels less interested in recreating television history than examining the appetite that allowed it to thrive. My full review online at @theAUreview. theaureview.com/watch/film-r…
With Taylor Swift saying her latest ENCORE is born from commercial success instead of artistic merit, I’m bringing back this opinion piece I wrote earlier in the year regarding her variant problem and how she’s now more a product of marketing. theaureview.com/music/taylor…
There’s both a comic energy and eventual melancholy to #TheStuntDriver (@IndieFilmCom) that keeps it elevated above the standard sports biopic it easily could have become. theaureview.com/watch/film-r…
One of the biggest surprises out of last year’s TIFF, #CharlieHarper is finally gracing our screens. It’s an emotional dramedy that indulges in the messiness of romance, with Nick Robinson and Emilia Jones both turning in stellar performances. theaureview.com/watch/film-r…
#LaBolaNegra: An epic in every sense, I was wondering how this was all going to come together after its first two hours of interesting, but seemingly disjointed narrative. Then it sticks its landing in every sense. Sweeping, beautiful, tragic, owning its queerness. #TIFF
Out of #TIFF I spoke to Taron Egerton and director Jonathan Schey on the red carpet for EVERYBODY WANTS TO F*CK ME, talking about where the satire stops and the confession begins. theaureview.com/watch/interv…
#TheJuliaSet: Serviceable coming-of-age drama doesn’t break convention and hits most of the beats you expect, but Chase Infiniti only continues to prove her undeniable screen presence. Christopher Briney embodying the year’s most insufferable character. #TIFF
#EverybodyWantsToFuckMe: Far more of a horror movie than I was expecting, this blackly comic commentary of the performative nice guy proves a neat companion piece to GET OUT. Taron Egerton goes all in with one of the year’s funniest, most committed performances. #TIFF
Out of #TIFF I sat down with Rhys Ifans and Laura Linney to discuss their drama #OnwardsAndSideways and finding beauty in the unexpected. theaureview.com/watch/interv…
#GirlGroup: Oof! Rebel Wilson’s sophomore effort is predictable, telegraphed, and feels like a 90s/2000s comedy in the worst way. The saving grace? Nicole Scherzinger as a diva popstar (too on the nose?) - exactly the energy this film needs. #TIFF
#ResidentEvil: Given how funny BARBARIAN and WEAPONS proved to be, it makes sense that Zach Cregger would implement a serious boost of humour throughout the carnage of this. Very much its own entity away from the games, this is lean and vicious with well-executed jump scares.
