It is 40 years since Live aid raised £145 million to alleviate famine in the Horn of Africa. In 1985 the population of Ethiopia was 37.6 million people, today it is 135.5 million people. Eritrea in 1985 was 2.4 million, today it is 3.8 million Somalia in 1985: was 6.4 million today it is 19.3 million people. Most of the relief funds were siphoned off by the Derg to purchase Soviet arms, exacerbating the famine by supporting military campaigns rather than relief efforts. Reports indicate that in Tigray, up to 75% of the famine-stricken population did not receive aid due to government restrictions and attacks on relief convoys.
