Thank you very much to Ali Masood, Ethan Boldt, and Bill Myers for recognizing my work: "The Journal of Law and Courts Article Award Committee recognizes Benjamin Garcia-Holgado’s 'Overruling the Executive: Judicial Strategies to Resist Democratic Erosion.' The article theorizes how autonomous apex courts counter executive power expansion by strategically using judicial review and building broad pro-democracy coalitions. Grounded in Argentina’s democratic resilience from 2007 to 2015, the author combines process tracing and counterfactual analysis with an extraordinary dataset—including 125 elite interviews—to show how the Supreme Court resisted executive overreach. The committee praised the work's conceptual clarity, theoretical innovation, methodological rigor, and urgent relevance to contemporary threats facing democracies worldwide."
I'm very excited to have officially started as a Postdoc at @StanfordCDDRL! I'm also grateful for their very kind write-up of my work, as well as that of my cohort members. If you're in the Bay Area this academic year, I'd love to grab coffee. cddrl.fsi.stanford.edu/news/…

The US and #Venezuela announced that they reached a huge oil deal. Some details remain murky, and reactions come in different forms, from celebratory to ones decrying the pact.
A few, at times obvious, comments regarding how the deal changes oil governance in Venezuela:

I'm thrilled and honored to share that, starting in August, I'll be a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University's @StanfordCDDRL! I'll be focusing primarily on foreign pressure and opposition to democratic backsliding. I'm grateful to my committee and others for their support.

"Many companies are interested in investing in Venezuela, but a lot of them are wary of doing so under the current regime. The Chavista elite who still run Venezuela are the same people who appropriated the assets of a series of international companies." ft.com/content/617b4563-0f9d…

Surely what will eventually be needed (when conditions permit) is a criminal investigation into whether building regulations were adhered to in both the public and private sectors of construction in Venezuela, going back decades.
A big part of the story of #Venezuela's collapse is the erosion of broad governance and state capacity, and the increasing transformation of institutions into tools of repression and authoritarian regime survival.
So the earthquake hit, and exposed the state we actually have.
