📌 I’m going to preface this by saying I believe Lindsay Clancy should continue receiving intensive psychiatric treatment in a secure hospital for as long as doctors determine she needs it. I also believe there should be accountability for Cora, Dawson, and Callan. For me, those two beliefs can exist at the same time. If Lindsay reaches a point where doctors determine she is no longer a danger to herself or others and no longer requires hospitalization, I believe she should then serve time for taking the lives of her three babies. Believing mental illness played a profound role in what happened does not mean I believe there should be no consequences. And believing there should be consequences does not mean we should ignore the very real role severe mental illness may have played. Cora, Dawson, and Callan deserve to remain at the center of this conversation. So does mental health. We cannot let that conversation die down. We need to keep talking about it, keep learning from it, and keep pushing for change. Hearing Attorney Mark Bederow on Brian Entin talking about the supporters outside the courthouse, he said: “She’s certainly not a hero in this story.” And I agree with that distinction. Supporting Lindsay Clancy’s insanity defense, believing severe mental illness matters, or advocating for change does not require turning Lindsay into a hero. Cora, Dawson, and Callan are the innocent victims in this story. You can have compassion for Lindsay’s mental illness while never losing sight of that.
