📣 Meet the speakers joining us for the Big Tech, Democracy, and Human Rights Conference on November 6 at Stanford University.
At a time when rapid advances in AI are outpacing regulatory oversight, platform design is fueling digital harms, techno-authoritarianism is on the rise, and protections stop at the borders of a few wealthy nations, we bring together leading voices to examine what it will take to hold tech companies accountable to everyone they affect and to build a just digital future for the Global Majority.

Two weeks ago, we released a comprehensive report documenting an explosive surge in anti-South Asian hate online. We warned that the proliferation of racist hate and conspiracy theories, particularly great replacement narratives risks fueling hate-motivated violence.
Today, FBI announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man from Palatine, Illinois, accused of plotting a mass shooting at a Hindu temple.
According to the Palatine Police Department, Alexandros Paporakis, who was taken into custody on October 11, had drafted a manifesto containing white supremacist extremist writings, including references to violence targeting people of South Asian descent, particularly Indians.
While it remains unclear what role digital platforms played in his radicalization, we know that online hate, extremist propaganda, and conspiracy theories create pathways to real-world violence. The danger is not confined to digital spaces.
This incident should be a wake-up call to confront the growing normalization of anti-South Asian hate with the seriousness it demands. Now more than ever, we need sustained prevention and early intervention to disrupt the pathways through which young people are drawn into extremist ideologies and mobilized toward violence.

📣 #Announcement: The Big Tech, Democracy, and Human Rights Conference is back for a second year. On November 6, we’ll be at Stanford University with researchers, technologists, journalists, policy professionals, and advocates for a full day on the growing power of technology companies and what it means for the Global Majority.
We’ll get into online harms, platform accountability, AI, surveillance, techno-authoritarianism, and where tech governance goes from here, all of it circling the same question: how do we reshape tech power and build a just digital future for the Global Majority?

#NewReport: CSOH and Research in Societal Extremism (RISE) at @CharlesUniPRG map the landscape of Czech-language online hate and examine how hateful narratives targeting different minority communities intersect and reinforce one another.
The report documents dehumanizing rhetoric, narratives of criminality and societal collapse, the “Great Replacement,” “Islamization,” and calls for exclusion.
It also finds significant gaps in the response to online hate. The Czech Telecommunications Office (Český telekomunikačnà úřad), the country’s Digital Services Coordinator, still lacks the statutory powers needed to carry out core functions under the EU’s Digital Services Act.

International students are not taking up most of the admission spots at the University of Texas at Austin.
The photo in the post is not from a graduation ceremony. It was taken from a video shot at a Texas Longhorns football game on September 12th, 2026.
Under Texas law, UT Austin reserves 90% of its first-year undergraduate admission spaces for Texas residents. The remaining 10% are shared between out-of-state and international students.

Sri Lanka’s far-right landscape is changing.
For years, its politics were largely shaped by militant Sinhala Buddhist nationalism, mobilizing anxieties around minorities, demographic change, and threats to national culture.
Now, the Mothers Movement is opening a new chapter by repackaging older nationalist anxieties through motherhood, family values, and global “anti-woke” politics.

Japan’s Muslims make up just 0.3% of the country’s population. Yet a few local disputes over burial grounds and mosques are increasingly being picked up and amplified by far-right actors across borders.
Our latest analysis examines how local controversies in Japan are transformed into global narratives of “Islamization,” demographic replacement, and cultural displacement and then fed back into Japanese political discourse.

I was deported from Morocco while travelling to attend @IRFSummit - North Africa.
Although INTERPOL deleted China’s politically motivated Red Notice against me in 2018, I continue to face the consequences of Beijing’s campaign of transnational repression.
This incident comes only weeks after China’s new Ethnic Unity Law entered into force. While there is no public evidence that Morocco acted under Article 63, my deportation demonstrates how China’s expanding legal framework and political pressure continue to threaten Uyghur activists far beyond its borders.
As a German citizen, I will ask the @GermanyDiplo government, @eu_eeas EU and our democratic partners to help ensure that politically motivated travel restrictions are not used to hinder my human rights work again.
Transnational repression must not become the new normal.
