A few days ago, I gave the after-dinner keynote at the HSJ Summit. I shared my prison’s consequences don’t end at the prison gates. They walk into GP surgeries, A&E and mental health services. The system doesn’t save people. People save people.

That is really interesting and positive news - I had heard things were going to be different and it would be interesting to see the progress.

It is a challenge. Operation Veneratio (historic operation that changed Tacumbú) marked a turning point. Comparing the facility when Netflix filmed the series with Paraguay's prison system today shows a significant change. It now operates as the National Pretrial Detention Center

Viewers of the Netflix show did not judge the difficulty of managing the prison’s environment with minimal resources and a culture that was allowed to exist. It would be interesting to show viewers these changes.

The spaces shown in the documentary, such as the old “tinglado” and kitchen areas, no longer reflect Tacumbú's current reality. The facility has undergone important changes in security, organization, and oversight as part of the transformation of the system.
It is a brave and positive step that has the potential to transform not only the prison environment for both those in custody and the staff who work there, but also the lives of the people involved.

Reintegration is at the heart of this transformation. Through education, vocational training, and work programs, people deprived of liberty gain skills in areas such as crafts, textile production, and other trades to build new opportunities for the future.

#newsnight Gillian Keegan’s comments about prisons and people in prison are so naive and typical of a politician. Everything she utters is a sound bite with no substance!
