Remote Area Medical has served over 1,000,000 patients since our founding in 1985. For anyone looking to attend a RAM Clinic, they often ask a variation of the same question: "What should I expect at a RAM Clinic?"
Remote Area Medical (RAM) has traveled to hundreds of communities to hold clinics, and we often get asked: "How does RAM choose where to go?"
Many communities across the country need access to free care. RAM welcomes invitations from communities interested in hosting a clinic.
CORE Volunteer Manager Brad Sands explains how locations for RAM Clinics are selected.

Remote Area Medical (RAM) is donor-funded and volunteer-powered. Our volunteers serve in many roles. While medical professionals such as nurses, dentists, and optometrists are always needed, our General Support volunteers are invaluable in helping our clinics run.
CORE Volunteer Manager Brad Sands talks about the need for General Support volunteers and explains that you don't need a medical degree or healthcare experience to volunteer with RAM.

Why do patients who have insurance still come to a Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic? In 2026, about 40% of patients at RAM Clinics have medical insurance. But having insurance doesn't always make care affordable.
According to KFF, the average health insurance deductible for a single person in the U.S. in 2025 was $2,169. A report by the U.S. Congress in 2024 found that Americans spend $557 billion on out-of-pocket costs.
RAM helps ease that financial burden by providing free care.

Many people delay or skip essential healthcare visits because of the cost. Even with insurance, medical, dental, and vision care can be out of reach. According to Zocdoc, a doctor's visit costs about $170 on average without insurance.
Remote Area Medical (RAM) helps remove that barrier by providing free care.

Dentures are in high demand at Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinics. According to the American College of Prosthodontists, 178 million people are missing at least one tooth, and 40 million are missing all of their teeth.
With 3D printing technology, RAM creates high-quality dentures for our patients.
Our capacity to provide dentures is currently limited. Your support can help us bring the Digital Denture Lab to more clinics.

Health Literacy Month takes place every October. It raises awareness of the skills people need to find, understand, and use health information and services. These skills can help you ask questions, understand medications and care plans, use preventive care, and make informed decisions for yourself and your family.
In addition to providing free dental, vision, medical, and telehealth services across the U.S., Remote Area Medical (RAM) promotes healthy living by sharing information that can help you make informed decisions about your health.

Many communities don’t have enough healthcare providers. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 92 million Americans lived in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) in 2025; an area without enough providers to meet the community’s needs.
Remote Area Medical (RAM) helps fill that gap by bringing free care directly to these communities.

Reagan was scrolling through Instagram when an ad for a Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic in Anchorage caught her eye. As a pre-med student at the University of Alaska Anchorage, she decided to volunteer.
“I was just kind of, like, inspired [to volunteer] because it sounded really interesting to be able to provide medical care for people who don’t have access. Just because it’s an ongoing problem, that’s progressively getting worse…” Reagan said.
