And what would the terms of rejoining be? On what basis does he have a mandate to discuss this with the EU? He told the Makerfield voters that he would not re-open Brexit?
Andy Burnham has promised "serious dialogue" over the UK's relationship with the EU. @SophyRidgeSky and @WilfredFrost discuss whether he could lead us on a path to rejoining the EU, and what type of politician he is.

As Washington pressures Kyiv to refrain from targeting Russian energy infrastructure, interest in funding Ukraine's drone units has spiked across social media.

"There is something quite perverse about Burnham bemoaning the remoteness of the out-of-touch Westminster elites only to then suck up to the even-more-out-of-touch Brussels elites."

👉Drilling in the South Atlantic is good news.
🤔But if new offshore drilling is good for their economy, why isn’t it good for Britain? Labour are all over the place on oil and gas.

18th May 2026, Makerfield by-election: “The last thing we should do right now is re-run those arguments. I am not proposing that the UK considers rejoining the EU.” He even said that doing so would “undermine democracy”!
Replying to @antoguerrera
1. Lord Kinnock: “Andy’s not changed direction, he's always been a committed pro-European. In the [Makerfield] by-election, he rightly didn't make a noise about it. That's tomorrow's debate. Simply because the by-election wasn't about Europe. It was about winning Makerfield in order to enable him to become leader of the party. That's all it was about”.

The IMF has warned against blanket cost-of-living handouts as the UK prepares for its October 28 Budget, with public debt at 94% of GDP.
The fund says any new support for households must be carefully targeted and funded, warning that energy subsidies might fuel inflation and put further pressure on public finances.

NEW: The state spent £1.1 trillion more on working-age benefits than transport, technology and housing combined over two decades.
Britain has used welfare as an economic opiate, numbing the pain of stagnation but failing to invest in left-behind communities.

🚨 The IMF just downgraded Britain’s growth forecast.
High energy and borrowing costs are killing our economy.
John Healey needs to get a grip. Instead of more tax rises, cut welfare spending and get Britain drilling in the North Sea.

Excellent article in the Wall Street Journal on Britain's unsustainable welfare spending:
— 7 million people (over 10% of the UK population) now claim at least one or more sickness or disability benefit. This is up 60% in the past 6 years.
— The UK will spend over £100 billion pound this year on sickness and disability benefits. This is projected to increase to £130 billion a year by 2030.
— No other Western country has seen such a rise in disability claims. In the US, 10.6 million people claim some form of federal disability payment, despite the population being 5x larger.
— 1 in 7 new cars sold in the UK are under the Motability scheme; however, only 10% of cars are modified for a disability. In one dealership, 25 out of 26 cars they sold in August were all under the Motability scheme.
— Charities, consultants, YouTubers and TikTokers have all sprung up, telling people how to maximise benefit access. Some of these videos receive hundreds of thousands of views. Over 1,000 people a day are signing on for PIP.
— According to a Government survey from 2024, 25% of the UK's working age population could theoretically be classed as disabled under the current criteria and access these benefits.
— A minimum wage worker who works 40 hours per week would take home around £1,880 per month after tax; however, if you are classed as too sick to work and claim PIP, you can take home £2,000 tax free per month.

Increased support for Ukraine is an appropriate response to Russian hybrid attacks - NATO Supreme Commander Gen. Alexus Grynkewich
"They [Russia] are trying to break our collective will," said Gen. Grynkewich, commenting on the intensifying wave of Russian aggression against Europe, including incursions into NATO airspace, arson, sabotage and cyberattacks.
He cited Denmark and Germany as examples of countries that increased their support for Ukraine following hybrid attacks on their territory:
"Those are appropriate responses that show Russia that the objectives that they're seeking to attain are unobtainable."
"The centrality of Ukraine to European security is undeniable. I think it will become very obvious to them [European leaders] very quickly what the right thing to do is, and why it’s necessary for their own national security," Gen. Grynkewich added.

Based on what? Because Putin told you that in one of your long, loving phone calls? Zelenskyy keeps agreeing to deals, Putin keeps rejecting them and increasing Russian attacks on civilians. Putin could end the war in an instant. He doesn’t want to.
Please show this to Trump - this is what he is paying for.
At least three people were killed, including a teenager riding a scooter, in Pisochyn, a suburb of Kharkiv, after a Russian missile struck a quiet street with civilians, according to CCTV footage released by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General. At least 28 other people were injured, according to Kharkiv regional officials. Ukrainian authorities released the footage as part of a war crimes investigation.
Where is the evidence Putin wants to make a deal? Russia has never agreed to any de-escalation of the war.
