Uganda is entering what may prove to be one of the most consequential chapters in its history. The story is still unfolding, but its significance is already becoming clear. What happens next will matter not only for Uganda, but far beyond its borders.

I welcome the Security Council’s latest straw poll, the first to distinguish the votes of the members, and I thank every Council member for their engagement. I am encouraged that more members supported my candidacy than in the previous round, and that fewer opposed it. I have said from the start of my campaign that reform is no longer an optional choice. It is an imperative. We cannot continue to do business as usual. The United Nations must become efficient, effective and responsive, an organization that reflects the aspirations of its members and the people it serves. I will continue my conversations with all members of the Council and members of the General Assembly in the days ahead. I remain fully committed to the work of building a United Nations that is relevant to the lives of ordinary people everywhere. DG Dr Patrick Amoth confirmed on Citizen TV tonight that an additional contact of the index case has tested positive, bringing Kenya’s confirmed Ebola cases to eight. The latest case is a 49-year-old patient attendant at The Nairobi Hospital who, according to Dr Amoth, did not directly care for the patient but handled his items, including utensils and linen. Methinks his exposure may have occurred before Ebola was confirmed and strict isolation precautions were instituted, although the exact timing remains to be established. This illustrates the serious transmission risk Ebola poses to healthcare workers and support personnel, including through items contaminated with an infected patient’s body fluids. Health facilities can become outbreak accelerators if unsuspected cases are not promptly recognised and infection prevention and control measures applied comprehensively. So far, the secondary cases comprise 3️⃣ relatives and 4️⃣ hospital workers. According to Dr Amoth’s update, all seven are receiving monoclonal antibody treatment donated by the Government of Rwanda for compassionate use. The earlier cases are reportedly responding well — encouraging news that gives us hope for their full and complete recovery. Encouragingly, all secondary cases reported so far developed symptoms while under quarantine rather than in the community. This reflects the important work being done in contact tracing and monitoring. With 128 of 130 listed contacts reportedly traced by @MOH_Kenya, we hope all high-risk contacts are among those already identified and quarantined. Finding the remaining two and ensuring no exposed person has been missed remain critical to containing the outbreak.
BREAKING: MOH confirms one new case of Ebola, bringing the total number of positive cases to 8 Dr. Patrick Amoth: Today we tested 38 persons; one turned positive- not a direct health care worker, a 49-year-old gentleman who developed symptoms of fever, headache, and muscle pain, and his test came out positive #CitizenSundayLive
