여전히 이런 글 볼때마다 몰입 깨짐.. 제발 그냥 읽어 ..단어 하나하나 의미부여하지 말라고 번역가도 전문가고 고심해서 적절한의미 찾은거임. 나 한국어 영어 다 읽는데 똑같이 좋고 재밌음 번역 잘했다 생각했는데 이런 자잘한거 트집잡을 때마다 짜침 진심

One of my favorite details about today’s update comes at the end of the ch in the Korean text! When Jaeyi swoops in to shield Ideum from Jiseong’s invitation and he says “Who says you can do that?” - in Korean, Jaeyi uses the term “마음.” “마음” has a few different meanings when used in different ways~ It can mean feelings, mind, wishes, heart…
So when Jaeyi says “누구 마음대로”? he’s using it to say “According to who’s wishes?” “Says who?”
But Jiseong responds back with the same word but it has a double entendre. Jiseong says, “이듬씨 마음이지”- which translates to, “It’s Ideum-ssi’s choice”
“It’s Ideum’s feelings”
“It’s Ideum’s wishes”
…but it also literally means
“It’s Ideum’s heart” ❤️
Ideum’s heart. ❤️💔 A heart we know is scarred and has been the cause of so much hurt in Ideum’s life, but one that he’s trying his best to fill and make whole. How many times have we seen Jaeyi kiss his scar over his heart!? The fact that that’s the line Munkkwa chose to end the chapter and season ended on felt so poetic and beautiful!! 🫶
근데 영어라는 언어 자체가 정서상 표현할 수 있는 한계가 있는 와중에 직접적으로 형을 명사로 부르는 것도 아닌 상황을 가지고 이렇게 컴플레인을 걸면 자연스럽게 문장을 표현하지도 못하고 오히려 역효과 날듯? 형이라는 단어를 관계를 표현하기 위해, 또는 상대를 부르기 위해 영어 명사로

I've mentioned this before but Jaeyi calls Ideum "hyung" so often in the original Korean chapters - almost every time he says anything to Ideum. But a lot of the time Lezhin just changes it to "you" in the English translation 🥲
To me, Jaeyi's often use of "hyung" makes his character seem more soft and sweet in the original Korean. He literally started calling Ideum "hyung" as soon as he learned about their ages - at a point when he's supposed to be acting tough saying they're just FWB. It makes passages like today's chapter where he's clearly more upset, read a little softer because he's still referring to Ideum in the same close way as he's always been.
(He literally refers to Jiseong, his actual brother, as a bastard/jerk while still calling Ideum "hyung" in this ch😭)
쓴다면 이해가 되는데 문장마다 영어로 3인칭인 “형”을 쓰면 흐름 다 깨짐. 오히려 번역가가 로컬라이징과 자연스러움을 잘 챙겨서 번역 진짜 잘했다고 생각함. 내 만화 번역해준다면 쌉만족할듯..
영어로 문장마다 형형 거리는걸 표현했더라면 읽으면서 불편할것 같음..

this is just a basic difference between Korean and English, you don't refer to people in third person in English while talking to them directly
