One wonders—was Paracelsus dabbling in identity politics when he noted that women metabolize medicines differently from men? Or was Virchow engaging in activism when he observed that disease does not afflict all alike? If half the species now falls under the banner of ideology, then perhaps it is ideology, not medicine, that needs a dose of reality.
