When being just and honest comes at a price, pay it. When forgiving seems like a defeat, forgive. When everyone tells you to think of yourselves first, do not be afraid to put yourselves in the last place. Be willing to give up time, money, comfort and plans to serve others. May those who see you find themselves asking: “Why do they live in this way? Where do they get this freedom? Why do they love one another so much?” #ApostolicJourney #Uruguay

I admit that I completely broke down today. I cried uncontrollably. I couldn’t hold myself together after witnessing what I saw with my own eyes.
Today, we went to film a journalistic report inside the displacement tents along the seashore. I swear, what we witnessed was beyond what any human being should have to endure.
I saw men crying bitterly. Men I had never seen cry when they lost their children or when their homes were destroyed. Today, I saw them crying because they were powerless to do the simplest thing: protect their children from the water and the cold.
We spoke to families who told us they had spent the entire night carrying their children in their arms after floodwater covered the floors of their tents and soaked their mattresses. They couldn’t find a single dry place to put their children. They couldn’t even give them a few hours of sleep.
I saw children no older than five, without proper clothes to protect them from the cold, without heating, and without a dry place to sleep. Children shivering inside tents that cannot keep out the rain, protect them from the wind, or provide even the most basic sense of safety.
What more must happen for this world to act? How much more suffering must people endure before someone remembers that they are human beings?
I am sick of this world. I am sick of its hypocrisy and empty slogans. To hell with a world that talks endlessly about human rights while leaving children to drown inside their tents. To hell with everyone who has witnessed this suffering and chosen silence, and to hell with the governments and institutions that have the power to act but continue to turn their backs on us.

NEW: Angie Nixon is running for Senate on a huge bet: Medicare for All can win over Trump voters in Florida.
To put that theory to the test, we brought Nixon to one of the unhealthiest counties in Florida — where 1 in 5 lives in poverty, thousands are uninsured, and doctors are few and far between.

Someone could probably write a book (if they haven’t already) about the cycle of technology productizing the removal of friction in the name of convenience only for us to discover that the friction was a load-bearing part of the social compact.
Someone told me he thinks dating apps are bad because they let you access connection without having any motion in your life. Normally meeting people requires going out into the world, entering new scenes and navigating unfamiliar situations. You have to be living a life that brings you into contact with other people. Dating apps let you order connection without doing any of that work

People who are heavily invested in not hearing or understanding what you’re saying will never be happy with the delivery method. It doesn’t matter how ~chill~ you are, or how strident. If you’re chill, they can ignore you, if you’re annoying, they feel justified in ignoring you.

My favorite thing is that COVID conscious people are basically right (COVID is awful for you, repeat infections are cumulatively damaging to your health), but they all happen to be the most insufferable people alive and so are the worst imaginable proxies

I think one of the things I actually value about masking as well as things like boycotts is the practice of regularly inconveniencing yourself for your values and politics. Which is something I do think is a skill that needs practice, especially in this world that makes...

Working thread of published research on COVID 19. Every claim links to a real study. Published, peer-reviewed research from journals like Nature, The Lancet, BMJ, and Nature Medicine. Not speculation, this is what the mainstream science says. Please take it seriously.

One of the most successful psyops is convincing people that marginalized people are annoying - because once someone’s suffering annoys you, abandoning them starts to feel righteous.
I want a theory of suffering that says: you are witnessing a genocide and it wounded you because it SHOULD wound you. the answer cannot always be to create enough distance that you can live normally again. sometimes the answer is to let that wound bind you to an obligation to act

I’m tired of having to repeat this again and again.
People naturally feel more comfortable donating to organizations because they seem more trustworthy, official, and established, with a strong presence and a large number of followers. But many of these organizations are run on the ground by people who exploit the situation for their own benefit.
The second problem is that Israel restricts humanitarian aid from entering Gaza. So even if the money is used to purchase aid, there is no guarantee that it will actually be allowed into Gaza. In both cases, your donation can end up achieving nothing.
One of the most direct and effective ways to support people in Gaza is to donate directly to verified family campaigns. The money goes straight to families, allowing them to buy what they actually need based on their circumstances and to pay the rent for the shelters they are living in.
Imagine if $1 or $2 million were distributed directly among families instead of being poured into the pockets of people running organizations and projects under the name of “humanitarian work” while operating more like private profit-making businesses.
The impact on families would be enormous.
I do not understand why direct aid fundraisers are not getting enough attention.
People in Gaza have told us that they do not trust big organizations & prefer direct aid to families in need.
I try to highlight small fundraisers for vetted cases that i'm 100% sure about & donate to personally.
Would be amazing if celebrities donated to direct aid campaigns.
