No it doesn’t. And no it doesn’t.
Both statements here are false. First, entropy is not the same as disorder. Second, the Clausius theorem applies to a closed system. It’s perfectly consistent with the 2nd law to decrease entropy locally by expending energy, which life does.
The second law of thermodynamics says disorder always increases. But life defies this by creating order. | bit.ly/4ggDAZ7
Philosopher Dorothea Olkowski draws on Ilya Prigogine's work to ask whether the classical version of the law ever described the reality of life at all.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Life does not defy the second law of thermodynamics, which applies to closed systems; living organisms are open systems that create local order while increasing entropy overall in the universe. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entropy_a… sciencesnail.com/science/the-hi…

Belated #WorldQuantumDay post (let us just make it #WorldQuantumMonth!), but below has since been up as a @JChemPhys Rapid Communication the past 3 months, happy reading at: doi.org/10.1063/5.0304559

Wonderful paper from a wonderful team of scientists!
Congrats @quantumgeometer, Luke and Daniel!

Clarice Aiello of the Quantum Biology Institute proposes 5 tiers of quantum phenomena in biology at the Quantum-Biotech Conference at the University of Maryland. @ClariceDAiello @UMDscience
Not a bad start to the year, with last preprint out yesterday as a rapid communication in JCP, alongside preceding one getting accepted to @PhysRevApplied the very same day!
For anyone in Rome for @S3IC_Conference next week, do go to @LukeDSmith’s talk: s3ic2026.exordo.com/programm…

One of the quiet privileges of academia: you spend your days surrounded by some of the brightest people on the planet — all trying to understand something deeply. Not to sell it, not to exploit it, just to understand. That changes you.
Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to Béla Tarr's screenwriting partner, what a day for the cineastes among us!
Chuffed to share this preprint (with perhaps an ever so slightly provocative title) culminating my work over the past few years as a PhD student at Exeter: arxiv.org/abs/2510.05074
This cool @ChemPhysRev Special Topic is now loaded up with our CISS review: pubs.aip.org/aip/cpr/article…
Immensely fulfilling collab w/ @foo_yanxi , @aishallwait, @ClariceDAiello and @LukeDSmith
Reminder 📢
This Special Topic is still open for submissions. Submit by July 30, 2024!

New preprint alert!
A review this time around, from long gestating @UCLA collab w/ @foo_yanxi, @aishallwait, @ClariceDAiello and @LukeDSmith
Timely having this one out now alongside the @QuantumYear2025 celebrations, stoked for next century's puzzles!

Little sis making big strides!
Am overjoyed to share that my team was awarded 1st prize for this year's @nqcc_official UK Quantum Hackathon! Our project addressed the optimisation of road maintenance closures, with the use case from @MindFoundry run on @dwavequantum Advantage2 system and @IBM quantum hardware.
New preprint just dropped: arxiv.org/abs/2506.21389
Took some time for it to get to the finish line, but super fulfilling to have taken it from an initial seed of an idea from during the early part of my PhD all the way to a concrete study.

Still gathering my thoughts after coming back from this, it was certainly special. Adding a little sneak peak, about a certain grandma joke...
