Just the month before SIR started in Karnataka, more than 1.28 lakh Form-7 applications were filed between the announcement of the SIR on May 14 & the freezing of rolls on June 16 Of these, 2,254 were filed “in bulk” by just 112 people, seeking deletions even before SIR began Read: thehindu.com/news/national/k…

“Our neighbours say we will be sent to Bangladesh because we could not prove ourselves” Bengali workers in Bengaluru borrowed money to travel home for SIR hearings, lost wages & spent thousands, only to remain under adjudication As the ECI begins its enrolment drive to add deleted voters, they still don’t know whether or when their names will be added back Read: thehindu.com/news/cities/ban…

I agree that journalists have the right to report, and the public have the right to protest. The anger is stemming from the fact that several journalists or rather their organisations, do not support the right to protest, and instead have systematically villainised the protestors. Yes, we can condemn the heckling. We can ask the protesters to stop behaving like this. At the same time, I hope these reporters (and many of them seniors) are coming back to their Newsrooms and strongly asking why they should bear the brunt for all editorial decisions and why things are not changing

Neither the heckling of journalists by protestors nor detention of journalists by police for doing their job of reporting should be acceptable. Bullying on one hand & misuse of power on the other. More newsroom leaders should be showing solidarity with all Journalists, especially those without the safeguards of big brands & conglomerates. Speak up for all journalists being targeted- by crowd or police. No reporter deserves to be targeted, heckled, detained for doing their job.
Unacceptable heckling of a good journalist @Vasudha156 just trying to do her job. We’re in dark times where public trust in the media is low, and journalists need to stand together for each other - whether they are from big networks and heckled by unruly mobs or independent voices threatened by the police.

Journalists condemn the attack on media persons covering the CJP protests on October 10, calling for accountability and respect for press freedom. “Attacks on journalists carrying out their professional duties are unacceptable and undermine the fundamental right of the media to report freely and fearlessly.”

I was just 2 minutes away from getting heckled by police yesterday. My colleague @pushkarv bore the brunt of plain clothed police ruthlessness yesterday. To be honest threat on assignment is becoming everyday affairs for us. Here is his account on what happened yesterday.

First-person account by friend and former colleague @pushkarv, who was manhandled by a plainclothes police officer while he was simply doing his job as a photojournalist. He recounts how other protesters were shoved and dragged by cops, blatantly using excessive force. Do read.

The response of @DKShivakumar and @PriyankKharge are welcome and reflects their accountability. Beyond what is said, the Licensing Order, 2021 by Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, restricting protests to Freedom Park, brought in when there was a BJP government, must be withdrawn

The @INCKarnataka and @RahulGandhi in Delhi are questioning those men who are in plain clothes attacking protestors and journalists. The situation is no different in Karnataka too.

Thank you HM @PriyankKharge for the intervention & transparency. There's hope when the government acknowledges & reviews concerns instead of turning a blind eye. If only other govts would take a cue from you.
The handling of the protestors yesterday by Bengaluru Police will be reviewed. The right to peaceful protest is fundamental to our democracy. It must be respected, protected and never suppressed. I have issued instructions to the police to ensure that no peaceful demonstration is disrupted. I also appeal to all protesters to cooperate with the police and keep the authorities informed, so that their safety and the rights of others are protected as well. The police are here to protect your rights, not to stand in the way of your voice. Our responsibility is not merely to maintain law and order, but to create an environment where every citizen can express dissent freely, peacefully and without fear. In a democracy, peaceful dissent is not a threat to law and order. It is a right that law and order must protect.
