With deep regret, we convey the sad news of the passing of Mr Adam Czerniawski. Renowned for his extensive output as an author and translator, Mr Czerniawski devoted his life to advancing Polish culture and literature within the English-speaking sphere.

This is powerful stuff, capturing what many in Whitehall yearn to do but are confounded from doing by systems and structures - echoing thinking of the Public Office from twenty years ago by @ruthkennedy and others. And still, here we are.

The combination of arrogance, power and incompetence makes the Treasury the part of the government machine most urgentlyin need of reform. Its complete obliviousness to that is a big part of the problem

Rearranging deckchairs is all well and good when the sun is shining. But in volatile times it's about as sensible as ignoring the OBR. I like Fraancis Maude but HMT is his blind spot. I'm biased, but why play politics with the rare department which actually works? #soundmoney

Lovely summary of how complexity thinking and policy intersect (@AntheaERoberts may like!)
Question is: what's stopping the policy making system properly engage with complexity thinking? What it is about public sector orgs that makes them nervous to engage?

Just put some pictures from yesterday's stretch of the South Downs Way on the other place and the other other place. And if anybody is still yearning for blue skies, I have invitations available.
I think this may be the most rapidly and frequently retweeted job advert I have ever seen. For extremely good reasons.

This is writing and reflection of great beauty on that day 22 years ago.
An important reminder that we only know how things end with hindsight.

"Where is the sense of national urgency" is the question . But please stop looking to the pandemic for an explanation. Look to a system designed with zero interest in the needs of its 10million young users. theguardian.com/commentisfre…
The sanest take you will see on Letby and the lessons to be learned. Not surprisingly, it comes from @CharlotteAugst

ALT In trying to respond appropriately to the malice we feel we are confronting in this case, we must not forget that it is mostly nestled in a far more banal form of evil – management failure, professional turf wars, indifference, bias. It is the normalised behaviour of ‘normal’ people in ‘normal’ services we need to pay far more attention to, for the sake of babies, their families, and all of us.
And if the first name as it appears on your original policy has one character, what then, @DirectLine, what then?
