Douglas A. Collins was sworn in as the 12th Secretary of Veterans Affairs on February 5, 2025, following his nomination by President Trump.
His background includes being a pastor, chaplain, lawyer, congressman, and now a Cabinet Secretary.
What does a military chaplain, congressman, and Cabinet secretary learn about people after spending decades listening to them?
My latest conversation is with U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins.
We recorded this one live at the Military Influencer Conference, and I wanted to get beyond policy talking points and understand the person behind the position.
We talked about leadership, listening, changing your mind, finding quiet when life gets loud, and what it actually means to take care of veterans.
A few moments from the conversation:
03:04 — Why Congress is like professional wrestling and his potential WWE tag team with Hon. Hakeem Jeffries @RepJeffries
05:03 — What 18-year-old Doug Collins would think about his life today
07:42 — The hardest part of Take Care of Veterans (mandate from President Trump)
15:28 — Why he reversed course on a VA policy after listening to veterans
21:34 — One question he would ask both party candidates in a 2028 presidential debate
23:20 — What being a chaplain, congressman, and VA Secretary taught him about listening
26:40 — Secretary Collins secret weapon
29:25 — Where he goes when the noise of life gets too loud
32:42 — What would make the next 10 years a success
33:58 — Why the VA has to meet veterans on podcasts, YouTube, and social media
37:42 — His billboard message to the world

"Life is not a straight line. The wrong turns, unexpected opportunities, failures, and changes of direction often teach us more than the path we originally planned."
This conversation showed a different side of Doug Collins and that is exactly what I hoped to capture.

We spent the last 10 weeks filming a special look into @SteveMaclin’s preparation for this match.
What he went through to make sure he was ready for the biggest match of his career will shock all of you.
Stay tuned 🤍
I’m glad I have this clip to look back on, because I know exactly how I felt in this moment and I will never forget it.
I felt every bit of why professional wrestling is an art form. Every piece of the puzzle. Every star aligned perfectly for this match.
A childhood dream of @RatedRCope to wrestle inside Maple Leaf Gardens, his white whale.
And a childhood dream of mine to find out if I truly had what it takes against one of my heroes.
I hope I proved that to everyone watching.
Because I know I proved it to myself.
That I belong.

No matter what happens in this world, it will always be YOU vs. YOU.
Mentally. Physically. Emotionally. Motivation. Discipline.
The biggest battle will always be the one in your own head.
Never let you beat you.

I cannot think of a cool tag team name for @RyanDLeaf and the @undertaker - but they would definitely be interesting to watch!

In addition to being Chief Speechwriter for former President @BarackObama - @codykeenan became an INSTANT New York Times best-selling author when his book Grace: President Obama and Ten Days in the Battle for America released.
Context for this clip: when reading Cody's book, I took note of something.
While working in the White House (or the Batcave😊) I read that Cody decorated his office walls with his Grandfather’s WW2 medals.
P.S. - I would love to have President Obama on my show as a guest to talk about fatherhood.

Derek Holland was one hell of a baseball player and fan favorite.
After chatting with him for five minutes I could easily tell why.
If I had to write a scouting report on Derek, it would simply read: World-class human being.

Cody Keenan: What 14 Years Writing for Obama Taught Me About Words, Hope & Leadership
@codykeenan is a bestselling author and one of the most accomplished political speechwriters of his generation.
He spent 14 years working with @BarackObama , ultimately serving as the President’s chief speechwriter and helping craft some of the most consequential speeches of the Obama presidency.
But what does it actually take to find the right words when millions of people are listening?
In this conversation, Cody and I discuss the hidden craft of presidential speechwriting, what he learned working alongside Obama, why great communication starts with understanding people, and how storytelling can turn complicated ideas into something people actually feel.
We also discuss leadership under pressure, the tension between optimism and cynicism, finding your own voice, the responsibility that comes with writing words for someone else, and why the stories we choose to tell matter.
This is a conversation about far more than politics. It’s about communication, leadership, storytelling, and the difficult work of believing that our words can still make a difference.
