Heads up: Microsoft Office, like many companies in recent months, has slyly turned on an “opt-out” feature that scrapes your Word and Excel documents to train its internal AI systems. This setting is turned on by default, and you have to manually uncheck a box in order to opt out. If you are a writer who uses MS Word to write any proprietary content (blog posts, novels, or any work you intend to protect with copyright and/or sell), you’re going to want to turn this feature off immediately.

Your phone apps might contain secret spyware. Shady shell companies pay developers to add hidden code, turning weather apps into surveillance tools. Govts & data brokers track your location, Wi-Fi data—even scan WhatsApp folders. Do you know what your phone is doing?

Senator Wyden: there is no such thing as a safe backdoor 👇
"Second, DOJ must stop pushing for policies that harm Americans’ privacy by championing surveillance backdoors in communications technologies, like encrypted messaging apps."
wyden.senate.gov/imo/media/d…

ALT Second, DOJ must stop pushing for policies that harm Americans’ privacy and security by championing surveillance backdoors in other communications technologies, like encrypted messaging apps. There is, and has long been, broad consensus among cybersecurity experts that wiretapping capabilities undermine the security of communications technology and create an irresistible target for hackers and spies. Even so, law enforcement officials, including your predecessor, as well as the current and former FBI Directors, have denied this reality, spread disinformation about non-existent secure backdoors, and sought to pressure companies to weaken the security of their products.

...the EU has more regulations directly linked to AI than basically anywhere, methinks this is less "uncertainty" than "our AI is built off bad privacy and safety practices and legally can't operate there."
Like, the requirements are pretty clear. You're just not meeting them.
We’re expanding Meta AI to more countries, including Brazil and the UK. Unfortunately, we still can't roll it out in the EU because of the regulatory uncertainty we face there. I hope the new Commission looks afresh at these issues, consistent with President Von Der Leyen’s aim of completing the EU’s digital Single Market, so Europeans can benefit from this new wave of technologies. about.fb.com/news/2024/07/me…

Important antitrust lawsuit against academic publishers.
We don't have to accept the status quo, in which these companies make huge profits on the backs of scholars, and damage science in the process.
