Alarms save lives by providing a warning to those in the building, but they can do nothing to control a fire. Having systems in place, like sprinklers, is key to protecting a building & allowing the business to run without disruption in the face of a fire. bit.ly/3WIdBNX

What started as a small fire in one industrial unit soon spread and required 10 fire crews to get it under control. Without an automatic sprinkler system, buildings were completely or partially destroyed. A sprinkler system is a must: bit.ly/3T9SRNr

Cold weather can present a risk of damage to your sprinkler system through freezing. With proper management and installation, you can prevent low temperatures from impacting the operation of sprinklers should there be a fire.

The low whole-life costs of sprinklers makes investment attractive. Sprinklers will last the lifetime of a building without major replacement or refurbishment. There are still many sprinklers from the 1930s in operation: bit.ly/3xi3LqU

New guidance provides for the installation of sprinklers in flats with a storey 11m or taller. Fortunately, sprinklers were present & activated at this recent fire incident at a block of flats in Doncaster. An example of sprinkler and their effectiveness: bit.ly/3S3wiIZ

In 2019, there was over 15,000m² of damage to school spaces & classrooms, impacting the education of almost 20,000 children. Sprinklers are still not common in schools & given the wider impact of fire on school communities, it's about time we change this: bit.ly/3ueDMi4

In terms of building resilience, we have to think more broadly about enterprise or the services that are being delivered. There is still confusion between building regulations & expected outcomes from fire, which can give building owners a false sense of security.

The average large school fire causes over £2m of damage (source: @FPA_tweets). The lack of enforcement for sprinklers in school buildings remains a glaring shortcoming in building regulations. What will it take to prevent devastation in school communities? bit.ly/3bKeq6s
