This graphic is spreading quickly in Phoenix. It claims this data center could be lethal to residents, especially the elderly and disabled. The same account has also called the project a “slow genocide.”
That’s not a serious way to talk about growth, infrastructure, or public policy.
So let’s look at the actual claims. 🧵

💧 WATER
Bluefield Research estimates Arizona data centers drew about 10,200 acre-feet from local water systems in 2025, roughly 0.15% of statewide annual water use. Not 10%. Not 1%. 0.15%.
And the claim that this project will “destroy our water” and make Phoenix tap water unsafe to drink? The graphic provides zero evidence to support it.
Data centers have impacts. So does every major industry. The answer is to measure those impacts, set standards, make projects pay their costs, and mitigate problems where they exist.
We shouldn’t scare people with claims the evidence doesn’t support.
2,900+ likes can make a claim popular. They can’t make it true.

Worth keeping in mind as more details come out:
Data center infrastructure ≠ data centers
All four Arizona proposals are described as "data center-related infrastructure." That can mean power lines, roads, pipelines, communications infrastructure, and other supporting facilities.
3,000+ acres of that isn't the same thing as 3,000+ acres of server farms. And infrastructure that supports new investment and economic growth isn't inherently a bad use of public land.
We'll be watching for more details from BLM. Arizonans should be able to see what's actually being proposed.
Arizona has lost a dedicated public servant and statesman.
Senator Jon Kyl served our state for decades and fought to secure its water future.
His work will continue to benefit generations of Arizonans.

NAU researchers, in partnership with Navajo Nation leaders, have been working to help Diné residents access safe, chemical-free drinking water.
They sampled water in wells throughout the region and created a map showing where water is safe to drink: ow.ly/J7bT50ZNuMb
Virginia has over four times as many operating data centers as Arizona. Texas has more than three times as many.
Yet residential electricity prices in both states were essentially flat from December 2022 to December 2025.
More data centers ≠ automatically higher electric bills.
Our focus should be on how we plan for growth and who pays for it. Let's continue expanding power generation while requiring large users to cover their costs.
We don't need a blanket moratorium or ban to protect ratepayers.
Texas and Virginia have already shown that a large data center industry and stable electricity prices aren't mutually exclusive.
Are AI data centers driving up your electric bill?
For most Americans, probably not — at least not yet. The tl;dr of our analysis:

Being against data centers may be the more politically popular position right now.
But Arizona will live with the consequences long after the politics change and the headlines fade.
- More than $1 billion in state and local tax revenue.
- 20,000+ direct jobs.
- Part of the technology ecosystem that helped attract TSMC's $265 billion Arizona investment.
We already have tools in place to manage this growth responsibly. We shouldn't throw away the opportunity because opposition is popular today.

More cranes. More construction. More traffic.
If you've lived in Arizona for a while, you've probably had moments when you wished everyone would stop moving here.
We get it. But it's worth asking what Arizona gets in return.
Since 2012, our state has added more than 830,000 jobs. That's more opportunities to earn a living, build a career, and stay in Arizona instead of leaving to find work.
New businesses also help fund the schools, roads, and public services we all use.
Growth comes with real challenges, and they deserve real answers. We'll continue talking about those here too.
We've heard plenty lately about the downsides. But that shouldn't be all we hear. The wins also deserve attention.
That's why we started Project 48. Arizona has a lot going for it. It'd be a shame to take that for granted instead of building on it.
Solar, batteries, and natural gas. All in one project. Count us in!
More power = More TSMCs = More good-paying jobs.
Arizona must continue expanding electricity generation to support our growing economy.
Using a mix of energy sources helps keep power reliable and affordable. That's the benefit of an all-of-the-above approach.
Arizonans deserve affordable power, but they also deserve power they can count on.

Yep. Pretty remarkable how desalinating seawater in Mexico and piping it hundreds of miles across an international border is the "simple" answer. But purifying water that's already here is a bridge too far?
And if "no major city has done it" is the objection to advanced water purification, which major city is doing "Mexico-to-tap"?
Hi @RobSchneider, telling Scottsdale residents this is "toilet water" is wrong.
The process is called advanced water purification. It puts water through multiple treatment stages, with continuous monitoring to ensure the water meets or exceeds drinking-water standards.
It's more strictly regulated than the bottled water you buy at the store.
This isn't new to Scottsdale. The city has practiced indirect potable reuse for more than 30 years, putting purified water into the drinking water aquifer. Direct potable reuse skips the aquifer.
Thousands of people sampled Scottsdale's purified water under the city's direct-consumption permit. Valley breweries even brewed beer with it.
Cities like Scottsdale are investing now because prolonged drought is making relatively inexpensive Colorado River water less reliable.
Here are just a handful of cities that are also exploring, planning, or building advanced purification systems:

We think desalination deserves a serious look. So does advanced water purification. We're going to need more than one answer to Arizona's water challenges.
Telling Scottsdale residents they're drinking "toilet water" is fearmongering. People are understandably concerned about our water future. This only makes it harder for them to know what to believe.
