WHY DO ALL OF THE CANDIDATES SUCK THIS MUCH
Freezing property taxes in DC is one of the worst policy ideas I've heard. It's a massive tax cut for people who own properties — including multimillion-dollar houses — paid for by DC residents who do not own homes. It also drains revenue from DC while we're in a fiscal crisis.

Regardless of what one thinks about the validity or use of an electoral tactic, surely deploying it over a conflict where tens of thousands are dying is a bit different than deploying it because a white man won a senate nomination over a black woman
Funny how when Black folks take a page out of the DSA handbook and go "uncommitted," "3rd-party," leave the top line of the ballot blank, or stay home in protest, (especially white) DSAs get mad. If "earn my vote" is the new thing now, then Black folks also get to do it.

I’m done with this, if this doesn’t make using this app a less rage-inducing experience I’m probably just gonna leave

Natural endpoint of the influencerification of film criticism = showering your movie in praise means nothing anymore
Tbf I don't think people *not* believing some of the positive Project Hail Mary reactions has anything to do with the movie or filmmakers. Rather, I think this skepticism comes with influencers who can't make a positive reaction without sounding like they just won the lottery.

This is completely irrelevant to the point that was being made. The quality of the art or even price of the tickets does not magically make opera and ballet as culturally relevant today as they were 100 years ago.
There’s like at least one bad actor in every movie and tv show. I don’t think bad ballerinas or opera singers get stage time.

This is the precise point that he was making. He doesn’t want that to happen and wouldn’t want to work in the industry if it gets to that point
¿sabe el chico chalamet que cada vez menos gente va al cine y que en cualquier momento ver una película de dos horas en una sala puede volverse un hábito tan raro como ver ópera o ballet? lo que es escupir para arriba

a common internet brainworm is categorizing commentary this isn’t glowingly positive as “hate”. everything in life isn’t glowingly positive. acknowledging the not so great stuff doesn’t make you a hater. naming the problem lays the groundwork for better to come.
Obsessed with the world deciding the guy whose mom, sister and grandma were in the NY Ballet and also who made the musical reboot film Wonka a critical and commercial success hates the fine arts lol let’s be serious for one second!!

last thing i’ll say ab the timothée thing is that it makes me really sad to see people pretend to care about the arts because if everyone on here supported the arts as much they claim to, art programs in schools wouldn’t be struggling for funding

This is correct, inasmuch as it would’ve been a better movie if it was about that
i saw someone reduce hamnet to "a movie about shakespeare writing hamlet" which is hilarious because 1. that's definitely not what hamnet is about and 2. even if it was that's still SHAKESPEARE writing HAMLET

This is obviously nonsense. Because Republicans had majorities in both houses, and budget bills can't be filibustered, Congressional Democrats had no say over what went into the OBBB, and did not stop Trump from re-filling it over the past year.

The fact that this was a movie and not an opera or ballet proves the point he was making lol

The race swap is the low hanging fruit, but the bigger problem is that Hannibal was 31 at the Battle of Cannae and 45 at Zama. Denzel is 71 years old. They did the same thing casting 50 year Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon. Boomer protagonist syndrome.
Denzel Washington will star as Hannibal Barca in a historical epic for Netflix, directed by Antoine Fuqua. Robert Richardson will serve as cinematographer. Production begins in June.

Yeah the whole thing was basically saying he doesn’t want film to “decline” from a popular/commercial art form to one sustained entirely by a small audience of mostly elite enthusiasts as had happened to ballet, which he is intimately familiar with given his mom was a dancer.
I watched the full interview and this was exactly his point. Film is not immune to the passage of time or to the possibility of losing cultural interest and becoming an art form that “no one cares about anymore.” He and Matthew were discussing filmmaking in the era of short attention spans and how studios now want their biggest action set pieces up front to grab attention immediately. He also mentioned an article about Gen Z now being a bigger movie-going audience than millennials and talked about balancing audience attention in this era while still maintaining the essence of storytelling. His broader point was about how to keep movie theatres alive so they don’t become inaccessible or niche art forms like ballet or opera. It was a rich and educational interview with cheeky moments here and there. It’s quite mischievous that people are clipping parts of it out of context just to dunk on a valid point. There are probably other things to be mad at him about but this just feels misdirected.
