Asking the simple question, “why are so many more Americans homeless now than they were in the 1940’s-70’s” yields many productive follow up questions which one may follow if not content with simple answers…
The last time the US significantly reduced homelessness was in the 1940’s due to a combination of 3 factors: 1. A militant and organized working class forcing massive concessions and redistribution of economic resources toward public goods and safety nets…

“Thug”. “Tyrant”. “Paranoid monster”. The cliches may contain some partial truths, but full truth must also acknowledge that he was also possibly the most literate and well read scholar of any political leader of the 20th century. Human beings contain multitudes.

I got it on good authority that this poem helps with blind rage, and can confirm, it does.

The economic rise of Asia is simply resetting the spatial balance of the global economy to its pre-1800 multi-millennia equilibrium. It’s gonna suck for America but Asia has always been the center of economic action pre this little 200 year interlude. Best to adjust to reality

1) It's fine for Marxism to be compared with religion. Discipline, rituals, values… call it Sittlichkeit and it's perfectly secular. 2) Merely understanding—not *agreeing*, just *getting*—Marxism is a completely irreversible process, like understanding gravity or evolution.
Marxists are legitimately religious people who think that if you read their holy texts earnestly, you immediately have to convert to their religion. If you don't, your inability to see God's light just makes you very dull. In the same way believers cannot accept anyone reading the Bible/Quran and not coming off convinced without a backhanded insult. Every educated person knows who the gravedigger is supposed to be according to Marx and why. I was indirectly asking a meta question about why they're not digging the grave and why people like you are necessary. But the "READ MARX!!1" tic is just too strong for the faithful, as if a certain Lenin didn't already feel forced to conclude the proletariat are never going to do the revolution on their own and that the vanguard is needed to nudge them into this direction.

Gun to head, I would name Policing The Crisis the most criminally under-read text written by a western marxist in the last 50 years
Hall and his collaborators did not use the term, but the discussion of how to think the relationship between race and class, migration/crime and nativism, super-exploitation and surplus population - drawing from contemporary debates - is unsurpassed, and of enduring relevance.

Commodity fetishism is not a synonym for distasteful consumerism!
What's the word/grammar hill you are absolutely dying on?

I like big books and I cannot lie. With rare exceptions they are worse as an artwork than a shorter version would have been, but I always respect the sheer brazenness of human spirit they require.

Mumia Abu-Jamal sent a message about his actual feelings about the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran. He wrote it on two paper plates. It is more eloquent than the Guardian letter, whose right to put his name down needs to be questioned. Who signed for Mumia? A transcription of the text on the plates: ‘My young friends, Iran is showing the world (especially the 3rd world) how to fight against the Empire. Their drones are rewriting the rules of war. And countries across the Global South are studying this phase of the war for that use! They remind me of Vietnam poor country that whipped the most powerful army on earth... That's where we are today. Love... Mumia’
