There are still ways to bypass this. This was emphasized in the last sentence. The point of the post is Microsoft wants your data and will fight you for it

I guess my takeaway (1) is: no matter what people say, actual privacy is one of the most valuable services in the entire world, (2) network effects ensure a winner, yet (3) it is a totally unstable balancing act for for-profit companies to provide this, long term.

"Delete your DNA from 23andMe right now"
From tech reporter Geoffrey Fowler:
Unless you take action, there is a risk your genetic information could end up in someone else’s hands — and used in ways you had never considered. It took me just 1 minute to delete my data on the 23andMe website, and I have instructions on how to do it below.

did you know that you can IP grab someone by just FaceTime calling them (so having their phone number or iCloud email) with the built-in privacy report feature
this leaks public and private IPs, apple's "private relay" is not affected (but that's an iCloud+ feature)

👏 Excellent news from France, where a dangerous attempt to create an encryption backdoor has been voted down.
Meanwhile in 🇬🇧 a secret tribunal will determine whether the government can force Apple to break encryption.
Time for the Home Office to rescind this draconian order!
GOOD MORNING AND GOOD NEWS!🌞 💐
We are relieved to see the French National Assembly vote against the dangerous backdoor amendments in the Narcotrafficing law.
To all of those who saw sense and stood against these pernicious proposals late into the evening, thank you!
Rejecting backdoors and the erosion of the critical digital infrastructure on which safety and sovereignty rely is imperative, at this moment in particular. May this mark a change in the winds, in which efforts to undermine fundamental rights in the digital realm, like these misguided proposals, are redirected into initiatives to strengthen our collective safety and liberty.

Hell, I'll go a step further: I don't consider it a "loss" for society to shut down exploitative systems.
If you genuinely can't figure out a single way to develop your tech without breaking laws and screwing over creators, then you're not very innovative and SHOULDN'T "win."

Niantic recently sold Pokémon GO to Scopely in a huge $3.85 billion deal. What they don't mention is what will happen to the location data of 100 million Pokémon Trainers or what Scopely plans to do with it.
Do you still have Pokémon GO installed on your phone?

This is a bad one, think about the extent of highly sensitive information a law firm holds smh.com.au/national/nsw/prom…
Meta’s audacious decision to invoke the so-called “Bob Dylan defense” in its AI copyright battle is nothing short of a brazen insult to creators and copyright law. By equating its alleged torrenting of copyrighted works to train Llama with Bob Dylan’s folkloric borrowings, the company reveals a reckless disregard for intellectual property rights. This move underscores Meta’s arrogance, treating artists’ livelihoods as mere fodder for its profit-driven AI ambitions.
The revelation that Meta may have stripped copyright markers from pirated e-books and scientific journals, as detailed in related lawsuits like Kadrey v. Meta, exposes a deliberate pattern of infringement and obfuscation. Authors like Sarah Silverman, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Christopher Farnsworth, who are suing Meta for misusing their works, deserve justice—not a flimsy, tone-deaf defense rooted in a misinterpretation of cultural history. Meta’s claim of “fair use” for AI training is a cynical ploy to evade accountability, threatening the very foundation of creative industries.
This legal strategy not only mocks the artists it exploits but also sets a dangerous precedent for big tech’s unchecked exploitation of intellectual property. Meta must face severe consequences for its actions, or the integrity of copyright law—and the future of AI ethics—will be irreparably harmed.
