A guy has paid $895 a year for the Amex Platinum.
He's carried the card for 3 years. That's $2,685 in annual fees. He got it because a friend said "it's the best travel card," and he loves how it looks when the server picks it up at dinner.
What does he use it for? Flights, a few hotel nights, and the occasional Centurion Lounge visit. That's it.
Last month, he complained at a dinner party: "I think I'm about to cancel. $895 is insane for a metal card."
Across the table, his friend, a former credit card rewards analyst who now helps people optimize their cards for a living, put down her fork and said:
"You've been paying $895 and using maybe $300 of it. You've never activated half your credits. You've never enrolled in the ones that need enrollment, so they've been sitting there unused. You've never used the $200 Uber Cash that resets monthly, you've let the digital entertainment credit expire 36 times, you've never touched the Resy dining credit that resets every quarter, you've never booked a prepaid hotel through Amex Travel to trigger the $600 hotel credit, you've never used the airline fee credit, you've never checked the Equinox, lululemon, CLEAR, Walmart+, or Uber One credits, and you've never added an authorized user. You're not paying a fee. You're paying a subscription and canceling every benefit inside it."
He pulled out his phone and opened his Amex account for the first time since the day he activated the card.
She walked him through 10 steps in 25 minutes.
By the end, he'd found over $2,000 in credits he could realistically use in the next 12 months, on things he was already buying.
"I wasn't wasting a premium card. I was ignoring a premium card."
Here's every Amex Platinum benefit most cardholders never use 🧵

A product manager pays $200/month for ChatGPT Pro.
She uses it to draft emails. She asks it questions. She generates marketing copy. She considers it “really good AI.” She’s using OpenAI’s most powerful model GPT-6 Astra Pro as a $200/month autocomplete.
Her coworker a software engineer who’s been building agentic workflows on GPT-6 Astra since the September 3 launch watched her type a prompt, wait for the response, copy-paste it into an email, and close the tab. He told her something that made her reopen ChatGPT and navigate to a screen she’d never visited.
“You’re paying $200/month for GPT-6 Astra Pro. That model can drive your computer fill out forms, update spreadsheets, navigate software, and test websites by watching the screen and clicking. It can spawn multiple sub-agents that work on different parts of a task simultaneously while you watch their progress. It can create finished documents, spreadsheets, and presentations that match your templates not rough drafts, finished work. It can schedule tasks that run while you sleep. It can keep persistent notes across sessions so it remembers why your last debugging approach failed. It can complete Financial Modeling World Cup challenges 4x faster than the winning human. And it has Deep Research that reads hundreds of sources and produces analyst-grade reports in minutes. You’ve been typing ‘rewrite this email to sound more professional’ into the most capable AI model ever released and closing the tab.”
He showed her 11 GPT-6 Astra Pro features that transform ChatGPT from “an AI that answers questions” into an autonomous work partner that drives computers, manages projects, researches markets, and builds deliverables while the user focuses on decisions.
Here’s every hidden GPT-6 Astra Pro feature most subscribers don’t use 🧵

1.3 billion smartphones get "upgraded" every year for a problem that has nothing to do with the hardware inside them.
Not the chip. Not the battery. Not the storage. Not age.
I spent an afternoon with a phone repair technician who has personally serviced over 2,000 phones at his own shop over the last 8 years, and what he told me completely changed how I think about "slow" phones.
"Nobody's phone actually dies at 2 years," he said. "What dies is patience. Background app refresh alone can eat 30% of your battery and processing power permanently, silently, unless you go in and touch one specific setting most people don't even know exists."
He walked me through the exact 8 settings he checks, in order, every single time someone hands him a phone and says "it just got slow for no reason."
None of them cost money. None of them require new hardware. Most take under 60 seconds each.
Here's the full breakdown 🧵
10. Do the math, and be willing to downgrade or cancel
This is the step most "optimize your card" threads skip.
Add up the credits you will realistically use in the next 12 months, on things you'd have bought anyway. Don't count the ones you "might" use. Don't count the ones that require you to change your habits.
If that number is higher than $895, the card is working. If it's lower, you're overpaying.
You have options: downgrade to a lower-fee Amex card, ask about a retention offer, or cancel before the next annual fee posts.
A premium card should earn its place. If it doesn't, cut it.
