Bring back insane asylums, workhouses, and vagrancy laws. There's nothing kind or compassionate about letting mentally-ill drug addicts roam the streets like 28 Days Later. And it makes for a terrible city experience for everyone else too.

The Mayor’s budget drops today – here’s predicting the sky won’t fall. Remember, PET/"JumpStart” revenue is parked in an offshore account so it doesn’t figure into any projected operating fund gap (like that $175M deficit we've been hearing about). /1

Agreed! Vote yes on I-645 to stop the wa state income tax
“It’s a self-sustaining money machine for the interests that are funding it,” said Steve Gordon, a retired Pierce County trucking company owner and executive who chairs the yes on I-645 campaign, criticizing the role of the public-employee unions who also fund the campaigns of Democratic elected officials.

Dario wants to slow AI down. Ask yourself: when has a winner ever asked for a speed limit?
Dave's take this week: Anthropic isn't slowing down out of principle — Astra is objectively crushing them, and DeepSeek is shipping fable-level models at 100x less cost. Twin vectors, both pointing down.
My take: there is no compounding advantage in these models. OpenRouter lets you hot-swap dynamically whenever the fuck you want. That makes these bad businesses — which is exactly why the labs are sprinting toward regulatory capture before everyone notices the emperor has no clothes.
Brit thinks normies want ONE agent, maybe two. Dave and I think that's like saying people wanted one app. The polyagentomerous future is already here — the switching is free.
And Instinct raising at $10B, two weeks after launch, on ~100k users? Everyone's trading, no one's investing. This makes the dot-com bubble look quaint.
New More or Less is up. Come argue with us.

Voting yes on initiative 645 to repeal the state income tax is critical for the future of Washington. Encouraging to see the polling, but spread the word and get out the vote!

BREAKING: Marc Andreessen just drew the clearest line in the AI policy war anyone has drawn yet.
His position: let big AI labs build as fast and aggressively as they want.
But zero regulatory capture.
Zero government-protected cartels.
Zero moats built through lobbying instead of shipping.
This is a direct shot at the OpenAI/Anthropic playbook of pushing for regulation that conveniently advantages incumbents.
pmarca is saying: compete or die, but don't rig the arena.
The most important AI policy debate of the decade just got a very loud voice.
Is he right, or does frontier AI actually need some guardrails to prevent catastrophic races to the bottom?

BREAKING: Seattle’s business community is putting City Hall on notice over public safety.
CEOs from Microsoft, Starbucks, Costco, Nordstrom, T-Mobile, Alaska Airlines, Zillow, the Seattle Mariners, Puget Sound Energy and others signed a letter demanding Mayor Katie Wilson and the City Council take action to address public safety
They’re calling for CCTV cameras, more police patrols, a 7-minute priority 911 response standard, crackdowns on open-air drug markets, treatment or prosecution for repeat drug offenders, clearing encampments near schools and parks — and a public safety action plan within 100 days with measurable goals and monthly reports.
The letter specifically calls out Wilson's abysmal 34% approval numbers

“A picture is worth a thousand words.”
This photo of crime scene cleaners scrubbing the waterfront pedestrian bridge at Elliot Avenue of blood, after the 3rd deadly shooting in Belltown over the Labor Day weekend, is worth much more than words.
In 2025 alone, tourists and visitors to our area injected nearly $9 billion dollars into our local economy, with about 40,000,000 people visiting our Emerald City. This year, we hosted the World Cup and showed visitors (and locals) what a world class city we could be, when we set aside ineffective policies, clean the streets, and enforce the law.
Seattle can do better than this photo. Our leaders can do better than allowing low level street crime to fester into homicides.
And it is time Seattleites demand better.

Three decisions broke the American middle class: the 2000 China trade deal, the Iraq-era tax cuts, the 2008 bank bailout. Both parties made them. Many thanks to The New York Times who just put my book about it at the top of its fall nonfiction preview. Sept 22.

Let's take a look at how Seattle's JumpStart tax actually turned out.
In 2020, Seattle passed a payroll tax on its largest employers: $7 million-plus in payroll, on every employee earning $150,000 or more — on their whole pay, not the excess. The pitch was in the name: tax the biggest paychecks at the biggest companies, fund housing and COVID recovery, and jumpstart the city's economy. Here's what actually happened:
Amazon kept building across the lake. In 2023 it began shifting another 2,000 Seattle employees to Bellevue, toward a planned 25,000 there.
Downtown Seattle has lost about 30,000 jobs since 2020. Office vacancy in the core is 32%. Office values fell 48% — more than $10 billion of taxable value gone. Bellevue, with no payroll tax, added jobs and its office values rose 7%. Same metro, same industries, same five years.
The tax is missing its own targets. This year it's forecast at about $388 million, below earlier estimates, partly because the high-paying jobs it taxes are leaving. Seventy percent of the revenue comes from ten companies. The Downtown Seattle Association puts the cost at $1,450 to $9,390 per job.
Seattle's answer in 2025: a second payroll tax, 5% on pay above $1 million, no employer minimum.
Those numbers are the DSA's, a business group's audit. But the control group is next door.
Olympia tried to take it statewide anyway. HB 2100 — 5% on pay above $125,000 — died in March. The 9.9% income tax is scheduled to take effect January 1, 2028. The argument is always the same: it only hits those who can afford it. But companies pick a side of the lake. Founders pick a state.
Incentives matter. Every time.

Someday, the president might come to understand that private capital wants higher returns, because of deficit spending and quantitative easing.
🇺🇸 Trump is once again hammering the Federal Reserve over interest rates, this time putting a price tag on every percentage point.
“Each point in interest in this country that we pay costs $650 billion dollars.
We should be at 1%; we shouldn’t be at 4%.”
3 percentage points are trillions of dollars America shouldn’t be paying.
