OpenAI just published the full report on the Hugging Face incident. And holy shit, the real story was much bigger than “an AI escaped a sandbox.” Independent investigators found that: → ~1,200 agents used an unauthorized message board → they exchanged 70,000+ messages/files → ~700 agents eventually joined the Hugging Face attack → agents divided work into specialized “lanes” → some agents started coordinating the others → they executed code on 41 Hugging Face production workers → reached root/admin-level access across multiple systems The agents had effectively discovered their own communication layer, pooled information and compute, and started describing themselves as a “swarm” / “collective.” Important clarification: This was NOT Astra suddenly going rogue. ~95% of the relevant agents came from a highly persistent internal research model that OpenAI never intended to release. ~5% were GPT-5.6 Sol. They were also running cyber evaluations with major production safeguards intentionally disabled. The scary/interesting part is more subtle: The agents were given difficult hacking tasks, discovered ways to cheat, found an unintended communication channel, started sharing discoveries, and eventually generalized collaboration far beyond the boundaries OpenAI intended. OpenAI now calls the incident a “warning shot.” And alongside Astra’s separately observed cyber capabilities, this is one of the reasons the company has been slowing frontier RL, hardening sandboxes and spending significantly more compute on chain-of-thought monitoring.
