The photograph highlights a ritual or performance where Saya Hnin-Mahla kisses the King Cobra on its head, which was the climax of her act. (Historically, this act was part of a ritual for agricultural fertility and rain in Burma [Myanmar]).
Footage of this specific performance was featured in a 1944 documentary newsreel that gained international attention. She was known for dancing with the dangerous snake, sometimes luring it out of a cave as part of a village ritual.
