My last post for the foreseeable future: If the Biden administration really wants to send the message that they’re different from the incoming administration, now would be the perfect time to impose sanctions on Israel with minimal electoral implications

#KAOS nails it with how confused the gods are. Totally bamboozled and scared. They sort of understand their side of the universe but none of the mortal side, communicating with fear since they don’t know how else to, and the primordial side makes no sense to anyone. Phenomenal.

1) Elon’s tweet was obvious rage-bait for snarky “woke humanists” to scold him and look like know-it-alls to Western Civ Twitter. It wasn’t worth engaging with 2) us embracing Elon is like evangelicals promoting Kanye. It’s short-sighted and stinks of desperation
One of the most well-known humans, listened to and respected by millions, is recommending people read Homer. Is there something not to celebrate here? More people should read Homer. Every new person reading Homer is good.

Historians NEED to start clamping down on the idea that the main reason life expectancy in the past was lower because of infant mortality. 🧵

because content and structure are not separate things. this is the reason one reads the Iliad rather than a summary of the Trojan War and list of dramatis personae
This is a great question: why aren't there excellent summaries of the main ideas of classic thinkers? Why do you have to go read the original sources?

I am very sorry to tell you, but the rest of my art is not fine. My lived experience sadly informs all my art, whether it is obvious at first glance or not, so my whole portfolio reeks with the taint of non-conformity. For your own moral purity, I suggest averting your eyes.

A really very weird thing about popular classics discourse is how much people underrate the artistry of the Romans. Roman art and literature has had just as much influence on modern people as Greek (if not MORE)

i find new atheist "all religion is sky daddy fairy tales" types really annoying, mostly bc they render any discussion of a huge swathe of human endeavor impossible, and also totally ignore the nuances of the histories/cultures/hegemonies of different faiths

Still processing this news--thrilled to have been elected Oxford Professor of Poetry. And what an honor to have been running (or standing?) alongside such a terrific short list of poets I admire--@donpatersonpoet , @christianbok , and Mark Ford. Thanks to all who participated!

The top 6 degree subjects held in the House of Commons are: politics, history, law, economics, philosophy, and English. The fact that they want to stop more people studying many of those same subjects tells you how important they really are.
