NEW: Professor Marandi, a former advisor to the Iranian nuclear negotiating team for the JCPOA, is likely seeking to preempt a Trump Friday jawbone by explicitly shooting down the speculation that there is ANY movement on the Iranian side pertaining to their nuclear program.
But don’t take it just from Marandi. Yesterday, Ghalibaf himself said that the Iranians are only interested in a deal that meets their 7 core demands, with nuclear concessions not being one of them.
Aragchi, in his op-ed published in the Financial Times, also stated that Iran is interested in a deal… but only if that deal is compatible with the strategic realities of the war. See: 7 core demands.
And just this past week, Mohsen Rezaee stated that Iran would not be giving up one gram of their highly enriched uranium.
Iran has been EXTREMELY consistent in their demands since the United States shredded the MOU by forcing vessels through Hormuz and revoking the oil sanction waivers at the behest of Israel and FDD.
Unless you believe President Trump is about to unfreeze tens of billions of dollars to Iran as an act of good faith to return to the MOU…
There’s not a deal on the horizon.

Clarification:
My HYPOTHESIS, which is not iron-clad but does logically flow, but with INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE to state as immutable fact, is that the United States is pressuring PRIVATE companies and sovereign-owned entities to non-report to the VOLUNTARY reporting system that is the UKMTO.
The UKMTO only files reports from what CSO’s and third-parties report to them. If nobody reports a vessel strike or a vessel attack, then the UKMTO does not report it.
The UKMTO, in their most recent monthly report, stated that “a majority” of vessel attacks are not being reported to the UKMTO, thus the current figure of 30 vessel strikes in the month of October is likely (if we take “a majority” mathematically literally) at MOST half of the true figure thus far in October.
It CAN be stated with “a very high degree of confidence” that the true number of vessels struck so far in October is GREATER than what is publicly reflected in UKMTO and IMO reporting data.
Words matter. Nuance matters.

NEW: With Ansar Allah (Houthis) successfully striking the Saudi energy infrastructure at Ras Tanura, a site more than 700 miles away from the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, it has been truly staggering to see how effortlessly Ansar Allah has been able to target Saudi energy infrastructure and airports.
Speaking to @AlMonitor this morning, I highlighted Ansar Allah’s ability to strike critical targets across The Kingdom, and what this means for the war and the global energy markets:
Brett Erickson, managing principal at Obsidian Risk Advisors, told Al-Monitor,
“The Houthis have turned Saudi infrastructure into target practice with remarkably little resistance. From airports to critical energy infrastructure, virtually nothing appears beyond their reach.”
He went on, “The greatest threat to global energy markets is no longer whether Saudi Arabia can defend its infrastructure, but whether the Houthis decide to destroy it.”
Erickson added that “Saudi Arabia’s energy security increasingly rests not on Riyadh’s ability to defend its infrastructure, but on the Houthis’ willingness to spare it.”
“That is an extraordinarily dangerous position for the global energy market to be in,” he added.

The Gulf countries, as evidenced by this statement from Omani FM Badr Albusaidi, along with the Quadrilateral Summit held in Tehran yesterday, indicates that most of the Gulf understands that any return to war with Iran from the United States will just lead to greater defeat and destruction for the US.
🇴🇲 Oman says excluding Iran from Gulf security has been a fundamental mistake:
🔸Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi criticized decades of Gulf security arrangements built around excluding Iran and relying on foreign military powers, calling for a new regional security framework that includes Tehran.
🔸“Perhaps the most damaging of the priorities imposed on the region from the outside has been the requirement that Iran be excluded,” he said during a lecture at Cambridge University.
🔸This, he said, created an unstable system based on the “entirely false perception” of fundamental antagonism between Iran and Arab Gulf states. “There is no such fundamental antagonism,” he said, adding that any security architecture excluding Iran is “inherently unstable” and “structurally unsound.”
🔸He also said that Oman and Iran had developed the outline of a temporary arrangement to restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but said implementation would require compromises by both Tehran and Washington.

Netanyahu’s Political Dead End Could Be the preview for the Next War with Iran
One critical point that deserves far more attention is Netanyahu’s political predicament. He has no viable governing coalition, yet there is little reason to believe he has any intention of voluntarily giving up the prime minister’s office.
This creates a potentially dangerous situation. With no clear political path to remaining in power, Netanyahu may see another confrontation with Iran as an opportunity to fundamentally change the political equation. A national security emergency could put enormous pressure on his political rivals to join a national unity government under his leadership.
This is a very plausible scenario and one that should not be underestimated. The concern is not simply that Netanyahu might exploit another war for political future. It is that his inability to form a government, combined with his determination to remain prime minister, could create a powerful incentive to initiate or escalate a confrontation with Iran..
Any assessment of the likelihood of another war with Iran must take into account not only the military and strategic calculations, but also Netanyahu’s political survival.

NOTE: Many people pushed back on this, arguing that it would be “shortsighted” for Iran to press the advantage in the weeklong window between the Israeli elections and the US Midterms.
This argument only holds IF you believe there is a pathway in which Iran and the United States can avoid a return to war.
I do not believe that this scenario exists.
Iran either maximizes their strategic positioning during this window, or they waste a critical opportunity.
… But Iran HAS repeatedly shown that they will horrendously UNDERPLAY their hand during this war by being over-optimistic on a negotiated settlement and Trump accepting reality.
IRAN'S DANGEROUS WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY:
Tomorrow marks the Israeli elections that seem to have significant potential to unseat Bibi Netanyahu. After this, on November 3rd, comes the U.S. midterm elections…
There is EXACTLY a week between these two elections, and this is Iran’s opportunity to maximize their strategic positioning before a likely return to war between all sides.
Iran doesn’t want to significantly escalate BEFORE the Israeli elections, because this would give Netanyahu an excuse to escalate and potentially go so far as to cancel the Israeli elections altogether. Just from re-launching the war against Iran, particularly if he has a thinly-veiled “legitimate” excuse to do so, he will experience a rallying around the flag in Israel that would likely help him in the elections.
Iran doesn’t want to help Netanyahu.
But then there is a week before the U.S. elections… Israel has already held their own, so there is no longer a rationale for them to preemptively strike at Iran knowing full well that this would HURT Trump in the midterms, and realistically speaking… Trump may be the last TRULY Israel-first president Tel Aviv gets in Washington. They don’t want to sink him at the midterms for no reason.
And simultaneously, President Trump is DESPERATE to avoid anything that could possibly spike oil, gas, and diesel prices. And he CERTAINLY doesn’t want to bring the disastrous Iran War back to the top of the headlines right before America casts their votes that could turn Trump into a lame duck president.
So from October 27th to November 3rd…
Iran has a SERIOUS window to basically take free rein over the Middle East, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Oman, and Persian Gulf… Oh, and that so-called “Omani Route” as well…
This is where Iran may seek to employ actions that many people are surprised they have not throughout the course of October.
Perhaps one of the most likely courses of action they may take is attempting to re-mine the Omani Route. Again, think of this from the Iranian perspective. This is… basically the ONLY way that the United States has been able to survive up to this point. And sure, they COULD launch strikes against these vessels… but would they? REALLY? And what happens if Iran then uses that as an excuse to escalate further, bringing oil and headlines with it?
Beyond this, it is likely that Iran may look to disrupt the Gulf of Oman ship-to-ship transfer point. If they WANTED to… Iran could almost certainly sink DOZENS of vessels that are conducting transfers and waiting for partner vessels here.
In addition, we have ALREADY seen Iran significantly expand the scope of their vessel targeting to include not just vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz under US air cover, but the FAR more easy to hit targets of vessels anchored in ports in the Persian Gulf, as well as vessels in the Gulf of Oman (but not the STS point).
This is the concern. Before the Israeli elections, Iran didn’t want to escalate significantly because any resumption or excuse to resume war would be greatly beneficial to Netanyahu. Something Iran certainly does not want. But then until the US Midterms on November 3rd, Trump would flip a LID if Israel launched preemptive strikes against Iran, and in parallel, Trump will DESPERATELY want to avoid any significant swings in the global energy markets, and will want to keep the Iran War as far from the headlines as physically possible.
This week-long stretch is Iran’s single best opportunity they will ever have to shift the strategic landscape as far in their favor as possible to prepare for a potential resumption of war that seems almost unavoidable at this point.

Earlier this summer, the wonderful editors at @thebafflermag asked me if I wanted to contribute an essay for a forthcoming issue.
I said I wanted to write about Iranian bricks.
Iran's remarkable brick architecture has become something of a meme. Everyday there's a new picture circulating online of a beautiful brick edifice in some Iranian city (often courtesy of @SustainableTall).
But why is Iran, a country dealing with so many traumas, the site of the most innovative and ambitious brick architecture in the world?
That's the question I set out to answer in this essay, which starts with a visit to the mudbrick village of Abyaneh, just over the ridge from the nuclear site at Natanz.

NEW: US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in an interview with the pseudo-"news" outlet Iran International continues to spew absurd DC talking points that show just how futile the Iran War has become.
"They are like rats in a sewer pipe"... Again, this speaks to me more about how the Trump Administration views ALL Iranian people. Sub-human. They don't care in the LEAST about the civilian population, and this is why Bessent is imposing draconian sanctions that are specifically employed to target the citizens instead of the government leadership.
"They're in deep, dark locations, and they don't see what's happening to the Iranian people." Yeah, NO SHIT, you killed a ton of them last time in surprise strikes in the middle of negotiations! And guess what? This has caused MASSIVE problems for the Trump Administration because now they neither know what the actual decision making structure looks like in Iran, but the government leadership became FAR more hardline!
"The Ayatollah is very isolated." GOOD! He'd be an absolute IDIOT to allow the United States and Israel to track him for assassination again.
"Many of these leaders do not understand what is happening to the Iranian people." Pot meet kettle. The Iranian leadership is ACUTELY aware of the plight of the civilian population as a DIRECT result of American bombing, an American blockade, and American sanctions. But unlike the Trump Administration they don't then go out in public and make it very clear as Trump does that he simply does not care about their suffering.
The United States is so far gone at this point.
Bessent on Iran:
Many of the IRGC commanders, they are like rats in a sewer pipe. They are in hiding.
They're in deep, dark locations, and they don't see what's happening to the Iranian people.
The Ayatollah is very isolated.
Many of these leaders do not understand what is happening to the Iranian people.

NOW: Speaking to Fox News this morning, we continue to see President Trump allude to future US strikes against Iran:
“My question now is whether I strike a deal with the Iranians or finish them off for good? We get everything and they get nothing.”
Living in the realm of reality however, Trump ACTUALLY has two very different avenues to choose from:
Surrender to Iran, or blow up the global economy.
This absurd statement from Trump goes to show just how impossible a deal will be to reach between the two sides while Trump continues to seemingly believe that he holds the strategic advantage.
