This is another reminder about the PaRappa 2 decompilation project, where we reached 64% (~43% for matched bytes) of completion. 🎉
Recently we achieved shiftability (the ability to add & delete code and data).
As always, any help is appreciated 🙂

Pleased to announce that the PaRappa the Rapper 2 decompilation project has reached over 50% of completion.
I'm looking for experienced people who are able to contribute, so please, spread the word - it'd be massively appreciated.

Given the recent events in the decomp scene, I'd like to give a reminder to support human-made work and avoid/ignore the clout chasers and their slop
Thank you 🙏

with the sunsetting of decomp.dev, people really need to come to terms with just how much damage vibecoders have done to our community and OSS in general. encounter is a fellow dusklight dev and friend, seeing people treat him as replaceable in the scene is upsetting

So tired of seeing AI recomps. Basically, all useless trash.
Useless for modding, useless for research, useless for reverse engineering. Most of the time, the OG games can be played on emulators, so useless again.
It was never about game preservation, it was about clout.

These completely vibecoded recomps are ruining the name of decomps and recomps because when they’re done right, they’re so freaking cool.
Knuckles’ Chaotix Recompiled brings Sega’s 32X oddity to Windows and Android, with proper widescreen support and modern controls. A rare Sonic spin-off is suddenly much easier to revisit. #RetroGaming #Sega #Sonic generationamiga.com/2026/09/…

Thanks to projects like these, more and more people's first introduction to recomps and retro dev/homebrew is "PoS that barely works and has no attention to detail". Pretty sad...

If you were wondering why so many Re- and Decomps were made recently, it's because of AI.
They are often not on par with the quality of earlier decomps (SM64, MM) or recomps (MM) - there is often less care, less technical know-how with the decisionmakers and less QA involved.

This is depressing because my own reverse engineering work on Ecco the Dolphin was something I was very proud of but now any idiot with a prompt can do it.

Imagine 6 years of hard work and it’s overshadowed by the fact that Astra was used for the very last commit because like it came out the last week.
If any of your work used AI in it, everyone including AI fans will completely sideline the work you put into it.
super smash bros melee is fully decompiled, this project started in july 2020, so it took over 6 years. the progress was hugely accelerated by llms and finished off with astra. it's a very large game with 3.88mb of compiled code.

horrible news for preservation
even if you can "eventually" mod consoles to get game files out of them, you're now forced to always get the latest version that's available at the time...

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
With the disappearance of physical retail sales, Sony would hold a monopoly over video game sales on PlayStation because alternative digital stores are not allowed on the platform.
Without alternatives, consumers will be forced to accept unfavorable terms.
