Transformative grammar lessons can happen when teachers put a mentor text in front of students, spark the conversation by asking them “What do you notice?” and then get out of the way. @middleweb

NEW: It’s Time for Teachers to Put Grammar in Its Place.
You don't have to master grammar before you teach it, says grammar coach Patty McGee. The best teachers she knows encourage students to discover the rules.

NEW: Grammar & Reading Are One Subject. Not Two.
Students read better when they understand how sentences are built. Grammar instruction is also part of reading instruction and we should treat it that way, says Patty McGee. @pmgmcgee #grammar #reading

It's in every curriculum.
Every pacing guide.
Every morning routine in almost every classroom.
We inherited it.
We trusted it.
We taught it faithfully for years.
And study after study, and every writing teacher's lived experience, tells us the same thing:
It. Does. Not. Transfer.
"Don't use I" was designed for one very specific formal academic context.
And we stretched it to cover:
— ALL writing
— ALL students
— ALL grade levels
"A paragraph must have 5 sentences."
We put it on rubrics.
We marked kids down.
We said it like it was law.
Tweet 3:
It was never law.
It's not in any style guide.
Not in any handbook.
Not in any linguistic standard. Anywhere. Ever.
This is EXACTLY why I wrote Not Your Granny's Grammar.

"Never start a sentence with And or But."
Not a rule. Never was. Just a myth that's been haunting classrooms — and student writing — for decades. 😤
And we've been marking kids DOWN for writing the way actual published authors write every single day.
Drop the grammar "rule" you were taught that turned out to be complete fiction. 👇
Not Your Granny's Grammar is here to burn it all down. 📖🔥
