In my next GTV post, I will cover how to convert your speaking engagements into winning GTV evidence.
How to power your GTV application with volunteering
Volunteering is often seen as simply giving back. But for GTV candidates, especially under the UK’s Exceptional Promise or Exceptional Talent routes in digital technology, it can become a powerful asset, if positioned strategically.
Here’s how you can turn volunteer experience into compelling evidence, showing broader sector contribution and leadership.
Optional Criteria 2 demands recognition for impacts that advance the field outside your paid role.
Optional Criteria 3 rewards significant technical or entrepreneurial contributions, even if made in a volunteer or community context.
Volunteering with tech‑focused initiatives allows you to demonstrate structured, sustained impact far beyond internal company boundaries. But to count as evidence, your contributions must be meaningful, documented and industry visible.
Here are some excellent examples for you:
1. Technical Support, Development or Mentorship with Women in Tech UK
Roles include community outreach, event organisation, or mentoring tech talent, demonstrating public facing leadership and sector-wide impact.
2. Volunteering with Develop for Good or Reach Volunteering
Involvement in tech training programmes for youth or underserved communities provides structured, measurable mentoring beyond academic settings.
3. Digital or Technical Volunteer at AbilityNet
Supporting accessibility, website audits, or technical upskilling for disabled communities shows tangible societal and technological benefit.
4. Partnering with RNIB on tech initiatives
Volunteer tasks such as app testing, digital accessibility reviews, or tech training for partially sighted individuals add public good and specialised technical relevance.
5. Event support or content creation for TechSPo London
Participation in organising tech events or producing thought leadership signals active engagement with a broader tech ecosystem.
How to Use Volunteering to Maximise GTV Strength
1. Choose high‑impact roles
Aim for roles producing measurable outcomes (e.g. number of mentees trained, events led, accessibility reviews delivered)
2. Document rigorously
Capture outcomes with screenshots, attendance lists, feedback forms, testimonials, ideally from senior organisers or beneficiaries.
3. Align with criteria
Clarify how each contribution relates to Optional Criteria 2 (advancing the field) or 3 (tech/entrepreneurial impact).
4. Seek strong references
Secure letters from organisers or leaders (not peers) who can describe your volunteer impact credibly.
5. Frame in your personal statement
Integrate your volunteer roles directly into your GTV narrative as demonstrable public-facing evidence.
Volunteer Impact That Counts: What Tech Nation Seeks
i. Structured programmes (e.g. mentoring series, hackathons, workshops), not sporadic or one-off participation.
ii. Broader reach beyond your workplace, public visibility, community audiences, or influence beyond your internal group.
iii. Clear attribution, impact statements that specify your role, responsibilities, and outcomes.
Use our AI-powered GTV Reviewer (gtvreviewer.com) to:
1. Audit your volunteer evidence against Tech Nation’s criteria
2. Identify gaps in impact, visibility or documentation
3. Receive feedback to enhance your personal statement and referee letters
→ Try the GTV Reviewer and build a case that goes beyond mere employment.

🚨 A New Chapter for Nigerian Cinema: PlotWeaver Signs Strategic MoA with the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC)
PlotWeaver is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement with the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), setting the stage for a transformative era in the Nigerian film industry.
This partnership marks a pivotal shift toward a future where cultural storytelling meets cutting-edge technology.
What This Partnership Represents
This agreement delivers a strategic mandate with three clear objectives:
1. National Endorsement
PlotWeaver is now the officially recommended platform of the Nigerian Film Corporation for film development and storytelling innovation across Nigeria.
2. National Rollout
PlotWeaver will be deployed across all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria, enabling access to AI-powered storytelling tools for filmmakers, students, and institutions across the country.
3. Joint Fundraising Campaign
A collaborative £1.6 million fundraising initiative will support platform deployment, capacity building, and creative economy acceleration over a three-year period.
Why This Matters
Nollywood has earned global recognition through its resilience and volume. But the next phase requires structure, modern tools, and intentional ecosystem building. This partnership introduces AI-driven storytelling infrastructure to the heart of Nigerian cinema.
PlotWeaver is designed to support filmmakers at every level. From script development and character design to cultural intelligence and market insight, we are providing tools that enhance authentic creativity. With NFC's backing, we will support storytellers to craft narratives that reflect Nigeria’s diversity while aligning with international standards.
This is not simply about software. It is about sovereignty in storytelling. It is about equipping creatives with the power to tell their stories with accuracy, dignity, and global reach.
The Wider Impact
The influence of this partnership will be felt across education, production, policy, and international visibility. It empowers students learning film in Jos. It enables producers in Lagos to collaborate with peers in Accra, Nairobi, and São Paulo. It creates a new layer of opportunity for investors looking to support culturally rich, commercially viable stories.
With the Nigerian Film Corporation, we are reimagining what national infrastructure for storytelling can look like.
The Future is Written in Code and Culture
This agreement is a signal. A commitment to elevate Nigeria’s storytellers onto the global stage, using intelligent tools that respect cultural nuance and local voice.
The work begins now.

I am honoured to speak at Tech Expo Africa 2025 in Accra this November, where we will confront a critical question with far reaching implications for Africa and the world of AI:
The Future of AI in Africa: Who Holds the Power to Decide?
AI has become an integral part of our lives, making it imperative to pay close attention to how it’s designed, regulated, and applied. Africa’s AI market is projected to contribute up to $1.5 trillion to the global economy by 2030, yet many of the models, infrastructure, and platforms remain externally owned.
This raises vital questions about data sovereignty, digital infrastructure and the balance of influence between global tech firms, African governments, academics and local innovators.
In my keynote, we will examine the current AI landscape in Africa and the power dynamics shaping its future. Our discussion will span technical insights, governance frameworks, ethical implications and economic opportunities.
We will explore novel AI solutions shaping our continent alongside infrastructural challenges and computation deficiencies that risk deepening dependence on foreign computing power.
Equally important are national and continental policy frameworks which aim to foster a united African approach. This discussion would be incomplete without highlighting the central role of African universities and research institutions in building long term AI capacity.
Just as mobile phones and mobile banking enabled Africa to bypass legacy infrastructure, I share the optimistic view that AI can also “leapfrog” prevailing development hurdles.
We will examine the collective steps needed to ensure AI benefits African societies while Africans retain decision making power.
