Text or video is not only form AI can take. In embodied-ai.tech (#CHI2026, Best Paper 🏆) we create an embodied AI that acts via muscle stimulation to perform physical tasks: e.g., place a bike on a bus rack and more! youtube.com/watch?v=pJM2Z8mm… by @yun_yh_ @romainnith

Learning physics (as in physical behaviour) with a physical force based interface feels great, well done!
Our summer intern at Microsoft Research, Elizabeth Childs, led an incredible project building a haptic robot for teaching topics where it helps to FEEL the physics. Checkout the video! youtu.be/JxwKrtG6HAw?is=0xlP…

Using AI to write for you - start to finish - is really just you robbing yourself of one of life’s greatest joys: to think through a problem and figure out what you think about it, and in the process becoming passionate enough to take on the new challenge of solving it.

Such an important reminder. Review what people wrote (past tense here intentional), not what you would have written in their shoes.
Replying to @UpolEhsan
Review this version of the manuscript. Review the paper the authors set out to write, not the one you would've written.

New paper by @tangemicioglu (Cornell) using vagus nerve stimulation for appetitive control (yes, worked well against placebo/sham!). Very exciting work and thanks for letting me be a part of it too. Read it: tangemicioglu.com/files/pape…

The vagus nerve is the highway for carrying messages between your brain and gut. AppetiteCheck stimulates it electrically when you are eating, amplifying the body's rest-and-digest response.

Depends. If you judge a small pile, say 10 of a single AC, this is a bad idea. Probability tells you it's perfectly reasonable your pile could be all stellar and if you'd feel forced to desk reject half, that's not helpful for the community.
This is what CHI is doing this cycle right?

Conversely at larger scales this could be ok, but I'm talking 100s of papers. I know the first pass was around 50 papers and generally think that's fine, but then I don't think after that pass you need to ask ACs to have DR quotas again.

I agree with all of this. But I’d add one more reason why I’m doing a PhD: freedom. There may be few other times in life when you have this much freedom to slow down, think deeply about what the hard problems really are, decide what you want to explore, and figure out how to explore them. It’s the freedom to dream big—and have the time and space to try to make those dreams real. And freedom also means something more ordinary, but equally valuable: having ownership over your own time and energy. You can choose when to work, when to take a break, and how to structure your life around the problems you care about. To me, that kind of intellectual and personal freedom is one of the most precious parts of doing a PhD.
Students sometimes ask me if it still makes sense, in this accelerating age, to pursue a PhD in AI. Perhaps counterintuitively, I think it's a great time to do so. I wrote up some thoughts on this here: web.mit.edu/phillipi/www/wri…

Some very good notes and takes here by Ran for prospective students emailing professors in these exciting times of PhD job applications! Highly recommend the read and meditate on these takes.
My inbox is being flooded with fully AI-generated emails from prospective students. I tried to work out why I can't bring myself to read them, and ended up with some thoughts and advice for writing cold emails in the age of AI. My new post: blekhman.substack.com/p/why-…

All good ideas from CHI (I truly mena it! Lots of justifiable policy), except the idea that anyone can judge ones expertise than... Checks notes... The person themselves. Can't we instead assume if a reviewer declines they are acting in the best interest of the community?
Some authors are asking, can I decline a review that's a poor fit for my expertise if I owe reviews for my own submissions? Yes — and doing so in good faith does not put your submission at risk. Read more below. #CHI2027
