Noah radiated decency; his keen insight informed what became NPR's original sound; his interest in places far from power enriched our understanding of the nation and its people.

Canada had serious problems before Trump came along: stagnant productivity, and an inability to fix it because of regional obstructionism. Those problems come to a head in Alberta's sececession referendum Monday. Carney is using the crisis of Trump to fix the economy and neutralize regional dissent. wsj.com/world/americas/how-t…

There is a throwaway line in a WSJ story about the Seattle mayor’s failures about how reps from her admin traveled to SF to learn how Lurie was leading such a successful turnaround and were stunned by how it seemed to be connected to hiring competent people who know what they’re doing.
Nordstrom Rack will open next year at 2 Stockton Street, near Union Square! Three years ago, companies were leaving San Francisco. Today, they want to be here, and Nordstrom Rack’s decision to return to the heart of our city is another sign of the growing confidence in San Francisco. The 50,000 square foot Nordstrom Rack is just the latest example of retail coming back downtown.
We're making our streets safer and cleaner, bringing people back downtown, cutting red tape, and creating the conditions for businesses to succeed. I'm thrilled that Nordstrom is choosing to invest in San Francisco again, and look forward to welcoming Nordstrom Rack as we continue building on our city's momentum.

In a sign of ongoing health and finely-tuned working in the city of Minneapolis government, today the city council is asking the city attorney’s office to explore ways they can subpoena the city administration.

The organization led by this man, Asad Aliweyd, who led Wednesday’s press conference regarding Somali youth gang violence, is currently paying back $1.1 million to Minnesota’s Edu Dept that was deemed in civil court to be fraudulently obtained in the pandemic meal fraud scheme.
This is such a touchstone of this era and the oppressive parenting styles that epitomize our age.
Replying to @richcohen2003
@richcohen2003 say it’s easy to turn your kid’s activity into something you care about more than they do.
Sometimes the best thing you can do is step back, let them enjoy the experience, and remember that they’re the ones who get to decide what makes it meaningful.
Love Angie Craig.
New: Angie Craig has no regrets about running for Senate. She’s not ready to talk what’s next or the race but “not ruling anything out.”
If the WNBA called, that’s another story.
“WNBA commissioner is every middle-aged lesbian’s dream job,” she said.

Minneapolis (@mspairport) was named #1 airport in the country again last week - deservedly so. New data shows it's second-worst where it hurts:
Airfare.
With avg domestic fares of $502 in first half of 26, MSP was behind only Detroit (another Delta hub) among 25 largest.

i’ve watched a lot of friends make unnecessarily costly decisions under the assumption that every element of one’s life must be a political expression — including:
staying in exploitative nonprofit jobs, forgoing kids bc of climate change guilt, hooking themselves up to an IV drip of political news when it makes them miserable, cutting off family with even slight political disagreements.
and i think very little of it redounds to any public benefit. it often impoverishes their life and by extension others’.
the most effective and resilient public interest advocates i know cut themselves and others a lot of slack, because life is hard enough.
A gift link, because this piece is indeed bracing and worth reading in its entirety: nytimes.com/2026/09/20/magaz…

Not to mention the fact that it's pretty clear the Star Tribune needs this money. When you see future budget cuts at the paper or budget cuts at the city level, remember this moment.
I wrote a bit more about this topic this week: tcbmag.com/some-data-centers…
