The AI pilled developers have one major problem. They know how to build an 80% finished product. But lack the motivation to do the remaining 20%. In fact they can build 10 such features at once. But then the features languish in the 'not yet ready' state forever. Meanwhile the AI junkies have already mentally moved on to the next dopamine hit. That's because they are frantically trying to delegate the wrong problems to the agents (let me write a skill for this). For them every problem boils down to writing the right prompt. They refuse to play the product manager role. Otoh, the best AI programmers know how to ship finished products fast - sufficiently polished and complete but not pedantically goldplated. They aren't in a rush to merge their pull requests but they are in a rush to deliver value to their customers. Their feedback loops aren't slower but slightly elongated. They have the taste to know how to spend their time and human skills effectively in pre and post production. This is what sets them apart. If you are hiring AI programmers, filter for this trait.

In distributed systems, reliability isn’t just about retries and durability, it’s about knowing who owns recovery. My latest post, based on the Coordinated Progress model I posted previously, explores how reliable triggers create responsibility boundaries and how those boundaries shape resilience, observability, and complexity. jack-vanlightly.com/blog/202…
