A great study by the Hoffmann lab in @JExpMed shows innate immune memory can be propagated in a cell-extrinsic way via local cytokine trapping. In our Insight, Luca Frosio and I discuss how these findings suggest spatial niche-specific contron of trained immunity 🎯
Insights: Frosio and Ostuni @MyUniSR discuss study by Gorin et al. (hubs.la/Q043CjJY0) which reveals an unexpected mechanism by which IFN-γ sustains trained immune states through prolonged signaling driven by cytokine retention at the cell surface. hubs.la/Q043CjzR0

We're thrilled to share the lab's latest publication demonstrating how caspase-4 and the non canonical inflammasome recognize cytosolic LPS by preferentially binding to the convex portions of membranes - both bacterial and micelles @ImmunityCP @DIB_UNIL sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

65 years ago, the stability liver enzyme that controls tryptophan metabolism (TDO2) then called tryptophan pyrrloase, was shown to be regulated by substrate amounts (using “ancient” but clever biochemistry esp. by the late and legendary Bob Schimke).

TDO2 stability is controlled by CK2-FBXW11 that recognizes phosphodegrons exposed when tryptophan is limiting. Tryptophan blocks this process, ensuring a balance between substrate and the enzyme that degrades it. 65 years later, well done Alina and team!

Many people played key roles in the iDeg-IDO1-KLHDC3 story from Brenda Schulman's lab, @TengTengXu1 from my group, brilliant work from the chemists and especially Natalie Scholes and Danny Scott (@StJudeResearch)

Out today: the results of a multi-lab collaboration led by Herbert Waldmann and Georg Winter that shows the iDeg class of IDO1 inhibitors developed by Waldmann's lab have a dual function: they inhibit IDO1 but also promote Ub-mediated degradation.

The E3 involved is KLHDC3, which recognizes a change in the C-terminus of IDO1 upon drug binding. Importantly, this is human-specific, as the target lysine is not conserved in rodents.

Out today 🙌 new work from the lab in which we show that p53-driven senescence enables phospholipid headgroup recycling to help sustain the increased synthesis of membrane phospholipids of senescent cells nature.com/articles/s41556-0…

Today is Three Kings Day (Epiphany) in southern Germany and outside my lab at 11 am it was -18°C. Even on our pond at @MPI_Biochem (normally guarded by a badger and some ornery geese, it was possible to skate

To add to the excellent debate initiated by @LocasaleLab, I was cleaning up seminar slides and found a few gems from my "Mentoring" talk I give every now and again. Starting with 2009...

Although I focus on the "20 elements" of being a successful scientist, usually the trainees are bewildered by the economics of science funding.
