To celebrate one year of launching into Early Access on Steam, I've released a big update for MADHOUSE today!
It's official spooky season and you can play this build live on Steam right now!
The TIGSource Forum single-handedly spawned the biggest and most successful indie games of all time... Minecraft, Spelunky, The Binding of Isaac, and so many more all started here. Any OGs remember this?
The number 3 has always been such a powerful number in video game entries. The first entry in these games defines the formula, the second usually experiments with it, and then the third installment takes everything its learned and creates unforgettable perfection.
I lived in one of those really cheap hotels outside of SF's Chinatown for over a year back in '07. I put up with so much weird stuff while living there but when the crying guy who lived across the hall from me got bed bugs and they started infesting my room, I got out of there.
"What do you mean you haven't played MADHOUSE yet? It's already October 18th! I could have sworn you loved games that embody the spirit of Halloween..."
In general, there's a growing disparity between art with soul and art that's just technically well done. Today we have plenty who are good at illustrating, modeling, etc calling themselves artists, but are they really artists if they can't impact your soul or break new ground?
One thing that always bothered me about many 2D games made in the last 25 years is screen composition. The player character's sprite feeling so tiny on a screen that's just full of negative space gives such a detached and impersonal feeling. I don't connect with games like this.
To visualize, the player character sprite takes up less than 1/10th of the screen's height in this shot. Compared to earlier games in the same series, the PC sprite takes up roughly 1/4th of the screen height, which feels much more appropriate to my eye.
It's interesting that Square thought that Final Fantasy V would be released in the US as Final Fantasy III according to this early 90s Square newsletter, the Ogopogo Examiner.
I loved the charming and simplistic pixel art of the early SaGa games. I remember using colored markers to color the black and white sprites when I found them in print, imaging how cool different monsters that used the same sprite would look with unique palettes.

Someone is working on a mod that adds bots to the MADHOUSE Versus Mode! The human player is in the top left, the rest are bots. This is incredible! Hoping this can be implemented in the actual game, too.
Despite now being obvious, it never crossed my mind that you could beat Final Fantasy VI without finding all your friends, and it even affects how the ending sequence plays out. Wild and somewhat depressing, though:

Might be a fun challenge to try!
