In 1835 Thomas Carlyle lent John Stuart Mill his manuscript of 'The French Revolution: A History' but, according to Mill, his maid mistook it for waste paper and used the whole pile for kindling. Carlyle re-wrote it from scratch and Mill reviewed it is a work of ‘genius'.
