My book is released today. Yay! An ethnography of how humans share worlds with elephants at the forest fringes of Assam's capital city. Coexistence is explored through copresence & the vulnerability felt by both communities in their ambivalent relating taylorfrancis.com/books/mono…

"Rather than beginning with the usual alarming headlines about elephants and people, this is the relationship we want to examine: what becomes possible when co-existence is understood as a practice of paying attention and adapting to one another" hindustantimes.com/ht-insigh…

An elephant bibliophile can never have enough of elephant books. A rare signed copy of Assam Shikari by Frank Nicholls.

With the passing away of the injured calf, the death toll now stands at 8. But then, these are just mere numbers which will be forgotten in the days to come and things will carry on a usual till another such occurrence is witnessed.
Replying to @karishmahasnat
The calf was barely a day old when admitted to CWRC with critical injuries. It succumbed to its wounds this morning (13/12), having suffered a fractured limb and internal bleeding. The death toll has now risen to eight. Sharing this video reluctantly — to show how a baby elephant met a tragic end while trying to keep up with its family as they crossed a railway track. @RailNf — if this is what happens to ‘Bholu’, it’s time you change your mascot. And @assamforest if you are committed to saving wildlife, show it.

our ongoing dialogue with pigs [inspires us] to cultivate a research ethos that values non-linearity, thoroughness, passion, & uncertainty....[we] work with diverse knowledges & overlooked resources, pursue spontaneous, stimulating, even if frivolous paths tinyurl.com/5xvfnd3j

Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam. A developing country definitely needs linear infrastructure, but at what cost?A little bit of understanding, patience and compassion is what is required to save these "Gentle Giants" from train hits.

Ambika Aiyadurai again gathering together what looks like to be a wonderful set of papers exploring human-animal relations in marginalized societies of South Asia, especially of Dalits and Tribals. Looking forward to reading this cambridge.org/core/books/bei…

Really wonderful hosts, great questions, the kind I want to explore more (reciprocally and beyond the frame of my book). Also a reminder of how close to my heart mind, other minds, and inter-subjectivity and experience as a human animal topic has been.
I'll be chatting with Susan Harris and Anu Pande about my book for their Indian Animal Studies Collective Table Talk series, tomorrow at 15:00 CET. Looking forward to it! Register: us06web.zoom.us/meeting/regi…

On the evening of 4th June 1908, a cargo train coming from Nakhon Ratchasima collided with an elephant in Pathum Thani. Three railway employees were killed. The incident made headlines in the French newspaper Le Petit Journal. #รถไฟไทย #thaitrain #railway #trains #Thailand #rail
