People would be shocked to know how few people are actually generating the news in this country.
For those wondering “where is the media on this”: Lloydminster’s lone TV station was shuttered. Radio news on a weekend is slim pickings. Nearest major centre is Edmonton at 2 hours away and they are also working on skeleton crews. + time needed to confirm details, etc.

Americans tuning into find out what just happened at Wainwright are going to be baffled by the normal nature and pace of Canadian government communications.

The problem with treating information like you’re the Kremlin the way the Winnipeg Jets do is your players get to find out what’s happening to their team via leaks immediately after they play.
#NHLJets captain Adam Lowry, post-game, on the Connor Hellebuyck situation and possibility of him returning to team by Friday. “If he does show up, conversations are going to have to happen.”

Are pro sports finally killing the golden goose?
The 2026 Dodgers had 51,000+ in attendance in 29 of their 81 regular season home games. The 2026 Dodgers had 51,000+ in attendance in 0 of their 4 postseason home games.

Not to mention the TV troubles that are happening everywhere. Nobody knows where to find games any more and only diehards will pay to have access to every one of their team’s games. (Cancelled my Sportsnet premium for following the Jets after two massive price hikes in a row.)

I’m a Cosh stan now and always, despite his provincial devotion, hockey team choice, etc etc.
I ought to be the very easiest person for an ad-hoc separatist movement to convince. They haven’t come close on their best day, writes Colby Cosh nationalpost.com/opinion/if-…

Good on the Albertans and the people who wish they were Albertans for caring so much about municipal zoning. (Written from Montreal where apartment buildings next to houses has existed for 200 years so is quite normal.) +

If we’re going to wage a war on rental properly owners in Montreal, I’d like it to be against whoever owns the multi-unit at the end of our block that has been empty, half-gutted and dormant for five years.

It was a low-cost rental full of sketchy and colourful characters when we moved here and I’ll take that over every park having a tent (or tent city) any day.

I'm sorry to hear of the death of L. Ian MacDonald. Long before I became editor of Policy Options, I knew Ian through his writing -- in our pages and in the Montreal Gazette -- and from occasional encounters around Montreal. +
It is with great sadness that we share the news of @policy_mag founding editor and publisher L. Ian MacDonald's passing at 78. Our hearts go out to those who knew and loved him.

After I arrived in Quebec to cover politics in 2003, I read him in particular for his understanding of Canadian Conservatism, Quebec Liberalism and his thoughtful, committed Quebec federalist perspective. He knew those political traditions inside and out. +

Ian edited Policy Options from 2002 to 2012. He was unfailingly generous with his thoughts and time. Just last year he dropped by our offices to chat politics and publishing. I valued his insight. You can see some of his Policy Options work here. policyoptions.irpp.org/autho…
