Andrew Scott delivers this speech too slowly; I know some viewers will hate the way he breaks up the verse. AND YET even in spite of that I think this is the best delivery of this soliloquy I’ve ever seen. He makes it sound like it’s not a portentous speech everyone already knows but a morally serious real-time deliberation, by a highly intelligent person in extreme pain, considering what it would mean to end his own life.

On this four-week course from the University of Glasgow, you’ll delve into the dark world of the Tartan Noir genre. With each week focusing on a different literary feature, you’ll learn what distinguishes Scottish crime writing from its parallels elsewhere in the world.

Can't wait to get back to it tomorrow. These are our class novels this year from Y3-6. For the first time, I'm not going to be reading it to my class - that stings!

I’m a big fan of this photo of Madonna looking like a visiting lecturer who will absolutely not give you an extension on your modernist poetry essay because you chipped your tooth on a Snickers bar

This exhibition in London (National Gallery / Nov 26 - April 27) is without a doubt one the most important events in years: all known portrait paintings by Jan van Eyck will feature in one exhibition!

For thousands of years, people have assumed Homer calls Odysseus’ Ithaca was an island. He doesn’t. Two scholars have just published what I think is one of the most convincing arguments yet for the “true” location of Odysseus’ homeland. And in doing so, they may have overturned one of the oldest assumptions in classical scholarship. Read here: open.substack.com/pub/allanc…

The founders of America were obsessed with the ancient Roman Republic. I knew that before I started writing my latest essay, but I found that they drew on it in more ways than I'd expected. During the struggle for independence, Rome provided: 1. Proof that a kingless state could win extraordinary power and glory (not assumed in the 18th century) 2. A repository of heroes to emulate. Men like Cato, Brutus, and Cincinnatus offered models of virtue rooted in republicanism. 3. A symbol of political liberty and a rallying cry to revolution. And once the war had been won, Rome became crucial to debates about how the United States should be governed. It offered: 4. An example of how different powers in a republic could be balanced. 5. Prior warning of the potential weak-points in a republican constitution. 6. A language and aesthetic of power that wasn't rooted in royal grandeur.
