Those who clamour for the return of the death penalty probably won’t take time to read this long post. But they should. The least they can do is inform themselves. johanuniverseends.substack.c…

“You are celebrating a person who spins Gusheshe and you think that has to do with improving the lives of our people. How does spinning Gusheshe improve our lives? How does entering a rally in a Gusheshe improve our lives?” - EFF President Julius Malema “ @helenzille has been butchering Brenda Fassie's song for too long. She can't sing it and it demonstrates that she's not intelligent. I mean, she has been singing that song for too long, why is she not knowing the lyrics of the song?” @Julius_S_Malema

This is the South Africa we should build not one where politicians pit us against each other and profit from our fears. We must put our differences aside, find common ground, and unite beyond politics. South Africa must come before politics 🇿🇦

I agree with much of this, and it would certainly not have been my strategy, but at some basic level there is rational sense in Mr. Mashaba's strategy. First of all, it is unwise to think of him as not understanding what he is doing. There's past burn to contend with, yes, but I think the plan is more than that, and it's not that stupid. To understand the ropes and pulleys, you need to understand identity conflicts (not identity politics). The building blocks, as he sees them, are a small party with very little to lose. That, in modern politics, can be an asset, a luxury. So he taps into one of the most predictable, most misunderstood sources of power in the Joburg race: Helen's race, hidden under various coats of lipstick as alleged policy failures, Cape Town comparisons and past betrayals, but still, the red button is the "threat" of a "white party" taking over control of Joburg. And this is where parties like the DA, in response, and most of the punditry, completely misses the play. Past and current good governance, clean audits, leaders with good credentials and records, all sorts of rational arguments only go so far, and that's not very far. This is how identity conflict works. Fear-mongering is a part of it, but only a very small part. Mashaba, if I have this right, is one of the few SA politicians that understand identity conflict, at least at an instinctive level. He is using the in-group narratives of black concerns, past bad experiences, pride in own ability, ambition, and belonging to build his platform. These are powerful human levers that largely bypass the facts and track records that Mashaba cannot compete with. In-group conflict manipulation has a wonderful added bonus - the more you fight it, if you use the wrong tools, the stronger you confirm people in their previously held beliefs. You just drop the first tweet and the reply guys do the rest. A good strategy of course does not guarantee a good result, and I think ASA has too may other debits to really become a serious player after this election, but as a strategy, hammering Zille is an Ikea-ready political conflict strategy
Johannesburg deserves a LEADER, not a man who throws tantrums every time @helenzille enters the conversation. @HermanMashaba’s politics increasingly look like personal vendettas dressed up as leadership. The obsession, the petty insults, the emotional outbursts where is the vision? Helen has a track record in public service, business leadership and fighting corruption. Mashaba offers more noise than substance. Joburg, please choose competence over bitterness. Vote Helen Zille. Leave the political theatrics to Mashaba. #VoteDA #VoetsekActionSA

The Trump administration is baffled by the "lower than expected" applications to its "refugee program" for Afrikaners, so it wants to spent $335,000 on advertising. I can save them some money. Applications are low because the "white genocide" is fictional. theguardian.com/us-news/2026…

Comparison with apartheid is in bad taste Madam. Imagine if someone said a badly run town in Germany, Poland or some other European place was doing worst damage than Nazism. Apartheid was declared a war crime by the UN for good reasons. A comparison of it it with maladministration minimises its inhumanity, dehumanisation which Chaskalson referred to as wickedness. ⚖️🕊️🇿🇦🦋

Heart conditions and panic attacks bad enough to skip the Madlanga Commission for months… but apparently not bad enough to stop a flight to Saudi Arabia via Dubai. Selective medical miracle.

Disagree with her politics, but “straatmeit” is not political critique. It is a gendered insult used to reduce an outspoken woman to an unruly stereotype that must be put in her place. Address her argument. Her candidacy or being a doctor does not require her to be quiet, delicate or agreeable.
Your problem is you act like a straatmeit instead of a mayoral candidate. Address the issues that are important to the constituency you are campaigning to serve. Being a politician doesn’t make you more important than The People. Never forget that. Mxm a whole doctor.

That ConCourt judgment on Electoral Lists is not a win for the African National Congress. It is a win for all those candidates and the people who would want to vote for them. Similar, it is not a loss for the Independent Electoral Commission. It is a loss for those who had hoped that they could win Elections by electoral exclusion of voters who would not vote for them. Let the voters decide!!

I’m with the constitutional court 100%. The incompetence of a party should never ever disenfranchise whole communities. Unfortunately no lessons will be learnt and we will be here in 2029 again.

The courts and judges can’t be captured only when they make rulings you don’t like. Less than 6 months ago, the ANC fought hard in the Phalaphala impeachment case and lost in the Concourt. Today they won on something else. Why? Because courts are not beholden to the ANC.
