Our FMA Area is 55% wetland - that's a lot of wetland and responsibility! I'm happy to share that I've joined @AlbertaPacific as a wetland ecologist!
Wetlands play a vital role in the structure and function of our forests. @AlbertaPacific collaborates with various teams and partners to better understand, restore, protect, and minimize potential wetland disturbance. Learn more: bit.ly/2YQNdoF #WorldWetlandsDay2022

Wildfire smoke is stretching from Illinois to Italy. Hundreds of wildfires in Canada have already scorched twice as much land as what typically burns in an entire season, according to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System. Get the view from space: bit.ly/3NTlQV6

ALT A satellite image taken from NASA’s Aqua satellite on June 28, 2023. In the upper part of the image, a cluster of wildfires can be seen in Quebec, Canada. Plumes of thick, tan smoke are blowing southwest from the fires. The location of fires is marked with orange dots, but note that the orange dots are not literally flames, but are hotspots as detected by satellites. Smoke is visible as hazy grey areas down the middle of the image — over Toronto, Buffalo, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and as far south as Tennessee.

2023 now is in first place for area burned in BC since 1950. Surprisingly, most of the fire season is ahead of us and we have already passed the recent record-breaking years of 2017 and 2018. wildfiresituation.nrs.gov.bc…

3) Peat holds a lot of water, protecting not only peatlands but ENTIRE landscapes from drought.
4) While peat can burn, it protects ecosystems from severe burning. More peat = good 🔥
5) Peat promotes diversity & strange critters that make our world beautiful & interesting. 2/2

5 reasons why peat is powerful:
1) Peat is 50% carbon. That C was taken out of the atmosphere by plants and soils and put into ecological lockdown. Let's keep it there.
2) Peat archives everything from past climate to archeological records. Peat = information we need. 1/
