Wonderful news, Kelly Ana Morey's magnum opus to be released on the first anniversary of her death. She called it "the first bougie Maori novel". ❤️🖤

38. A State of Siege by Janet Frame. My literary revelation of the year, putting me in the mind of Woolf and Lispector. A capacious and captivating prose that immerses you in the head of the lonely Malfred Signal trying to escape the siege of contemporary existence.
RIP to Maurice Gee, one of the greats of New Zealand Literature. And deepest sympathy to his whanau and friends. Maurice is pictured here along with many of his contemporaries, including Janet Frame, at the 1998 Burns Fellow Reunion, University of Otago, Dunedin. 📸 Reg Graham

My essay on the visionary, affecting and extraordinarily funny work of Janet Frame. Focused on the novels and short stories she wrote while she lived in Camberwell in the early '60s, when she was freed of her ‘schizophrenic fancy dress’.

Brilliant, brilliant Banksy
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
This is not a Banksy piece. Historically the artist posts his work on his Instagram page. It does not appear there.
The real artist’s name, Loretta, is clearly visible at left.

After being misdiagnosed and institutionalized for years, the writer Janet Frame published three novels that “deep-sea dive into her experience, the years of institutionalization, of forcible detachment from the social world,” Audrey Wollen writes. nyer.cm/1Yl1RuR
