What if organic is worse for animal welfare & the environment than conventional farming?

The cattle industry wants to change avian influenza's name, but they don't even know the consequences of the virus & disease in mammals. @mbolotnikova covers my concept of the "disease trap" of animal agriculture here. But there are ways we can escape 🧵 vox.com/future-perfect/24128…

Ah yes, canceling internal critics is a sure way to win back public trust!
@RIKKISCHLOTT & explain how the expert class is shooting itself in the feet repeatedly & then wondering why nobody trusts them.
People aren’t stupid, & when they see that dissenters get punished or even fired, they will never, ever trust you to be fair or unbiased about anything again.

This is wild: California senators want to exempt factory farms from the state's animal cruelty law.
If their bill, SB-921, passes, any practice the *industry* thinks is "routine and acceptable" is presumed legal.
This is like a bill to exempt coal power from environmental laws.

This is so unscientific and dangerous. The cattle industry must not get public license to give avian influenza a different name. It is H5N1: bird flu. It has a record of transmission between birds & mammals, and that makes it a potential danger to many more animals, including us
If only animal protection groups would work as doggedly, consistently and steadfastly to reframe and change the narrative as the slaughter industry.
We have to start taking notes.
The American Association of Bovine Practitioners is urging the media to stop referring to avian influenza infections in cattle as highly pathogenic avian influenza, saying they do “not believe that this disease should be referenced as ‘HPAI in cattle’ or ‘bird flu in cattle.’”
Instead, “the AABP will call this disease Bovine Influenza A Virus (BIAV) in our messaging and resources regarding this disease syndrome in cattle. We encourage other organizations, state animal health officials, diagnostic labs, and state and federal agencies to use this name so that we can be consistent with our messaging and better distinguish the disease syndrome in cattle from the pathogenesis observed in birds. We believe it is important for the public to understand the difference to maintain confidence in the safety and accessibility of beef and dairy products for consumers.”
With any new outbreak that comes out, we should be the first ones communicating with the media, getting our narrative and framing out there, and prioritizing animal and public health-centered information.

Our story made the front page of @nytimes! Thank you @AndrewJacobsNYT, @AndrewRdeC & @HarvestHome!
It's been a struggle to get coverage about the mass killing of farmed animals via heatstroke and the @AVMAvets complacency in this cruel practice. The allowance of VSD+ in “constrained circumstances” allowed producers like @Jennieo and @TysonFoods to receive millions of our tax dollars after failing to put plans in place to end the lives of their diseased animals in less cruel ways.
Hopefully, we can inspire more veterinarians to advocate for the best interests of others, no matter their species.
We must redistribute public funds to support slaughter-free food production instead of propping up billion-dollar corporations that cause large-scale harm.
Our future depends on protecting other species, not exploiting them.

Yes, the tendency for those who identify w power to imagine a supreme benevolent authority that would "do what's right" is far too pervasive.
AND, large-scale AI is an inherently centralized technology. Relying on massive compute/data that only a few centralized actors possess.

Two things in AI may need regulation: reckless deployment of certain potentially harmful AI applications (same as any software really), and monopolistic behavior on the part of certain LLM providers. The technology itself doesn't need regulation anymore than databases or transistors.

It may soon be a crime to compress public domain human knowledge into public domain matrices. We need to regulate the usage of AI in applications, not gradient descent

When a political group is dogmatic to the extreme, there is no limit to the horrors they will condone and justify for their cause—no ability to depart from those they consider on their team, no matter what it is their teammates are doing: kidnapping children, killing kids in front of their parents, massacring hundreds at a concert, whatever.
(Of course, the obvious implication here is that if the same exact nightmare happened tomorrow to white people in America, it should be supported and applauded.)
It is incredible to see this amazing technology being spun out of yahoo.
