I wish that all plant taxonomy studies were as fun to read as this one in Capitulum.
Delighted to learn that I’ve studied TWO endemic Cirsiums in Nevada. C. clokeyi (photo by Jan Nachlinger) in the Spring Mtns. & C. viperinum in Great Basin NP.

C'est ne pas un cactus! In @cobotanist's new paper out in Capitulum, molecular, morphological, and ecological data support the recognition of five new thistles from the alpine tundra of the rocky mountains, including Cirsium funkae: fagro.edu.uy/~bioveg/capitul…

If a child was born on the moon to astronaut parents who are multinational (like a Canadian and an American), would he/she have birthright citizenship in the USA? Is SCOTUS considering this one? Could the child legally return to the earth, vs. risk deportation? #Artemis
As a forester, they would have someway connected me to “loggers,” thus denying me coverage.
A reminder that pre-ACA, insurers selling health plans to individuals would not only deny people with pre-existing conditions.
They would also deny people based on their jobs:
Cops, firefighters, miners, offshore drillers and pro athletes were denied plans kff.org/affordable-care-act/…

The Mt. Charleston community came out today 5/30/24 in opposition to the proposed closure of Earl Lundy Elementary School. Here are the current and future kids being denied attending their local school, along with their parents who attended this school and former instructors. 1/2

The threat of a small school’s closure should teach CCSD a big lesson

The Clark County School Board spent $250,000 (as per KTNV reporter Anjali Patel) to repair the flood damage last August from Hurricane Hilary. It’s repaired, as shown in these before and after shots. Now what?
I drew a Clark County Parks and Recreation paycheck from that facility. How about #CCSD partner with Parks & Rec on operating costs and restart the after school & summer P&R programming? Let’s get some out of the box thinking towards an administrative solution to keeping it open
OPINION
“What the officials have yet to acknowledge is how much the decision affects the community itself.”

That flora is the pride and joy in my collection. Traded for its $125 price at Bookman’s in Flagstaff. All of various botanists plant collections from the Spring Mountains are georeferenced on SEINet.

One of the mountain elders gave this to me many years ago. This treasure is a rare compendium of all the plants from McFarland peak to the Spring Mountain Ranch.
Really, really hard scenes to geolocate. The IMDB set of still pictures is the ultimate Nevada geography visual trivia test. Might be easier viewing the firm…
Mainly a car chase movie, The Vanishing Point, starring Barry Newman with scenes filmed in Austin, Tonopah, Goldfield, and Wendover, NV, was released nationally on Mar 13, 1971. imdb.to/1ObdYvy
Note: This movie was remade in 1997, but that one was not filmed in Nevada.

@mountainman_mc It gusted to 88 mph on Angel Peak a few moment ago. Sustained at 54 mph. Feels like I’m back in Florida during hurricane season.

SO excited and nervous for tonight’s opening of The Biocrust Project exhibition at @utahmoca! This art-science collaboration with the amazing artist Jorge Rojas and @nature_org has shifted my thinking in ways I wasn’t expecting.

The # of uparked cars on the Kyle Canyon Road bend below Cathedral was unreal. At 3pm they were everywhere trying to park & touch the remaining dusting of snow. It was an accident waiting to happen. With Cathedral/Mary Jane Falls locked up they were attempting to access anything
So pleased to see @meganmesserly devote a USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism’s 2023 National Fellowship to covering health care challenges in Elko, NV as one of three communities she focused on. I spent 7 years traveling 860 miles rt to use my state employee insurance.
Mining companies offer jobs with good benefits. But those robust health plans can counterintuitively hurt their town’s health care access. I spent six months, traveled to three states and interviewed more than 90 people to find out why.

I got to see a set of proof prints of Don English’s 1953 series “The Dixie Showgirl.” Here is my follow-up to the thread about this Las Vegas News Bureau photographer who had an idea to shoot more than just a mushroom cloud. Be sure check out to the nuclearsecrecy.com link.
Appreciated the likes. I’m a Spring Mountains trivia buff, I guess. My wife was a photographic assist to the photographer, Don English and is friends with his daughter. Here is the link to Don’s oral history of this shoot (yes, you can drive to Angel Peak) blog.nuclearsecrecy.com/2012…
