“Why are young people economic leftists?”
I can’t answer this question for the francophone world, but in the United States my answer/s would be:
1) young people are broadly extremely misinformed about the structure of Western economic systems. Many of them are convinced that our economies are far more laissez-faire and deregulated than they actually are.
2) young people are extremely misinformed about the sheer quantity of government spending, and especially how much the government spends relative to the income/wealth of the richest people (e.g. all the assets of every billionaire in America would fund single payer healthcare for a year and a half)
3) young people broadly feel like the ability to accumulate wealth is not a benefit to them and like they are locked out of systems of asset accumulation.
4) in youth circles, economic griping is paradoxically often “high status.” developing radical political approaches wrt cost of living is generally viewed positively.

the naturally follow-up is “why do they think that’s the solution?”

This very much sounds like a West-only AI cartel proposal and, in fact, if you read Dario's essay - under the very telling "pacing within democracies" chapter - he specifically says he'd need the US government to issue an "antitrust waiver" for this.
The plan transparently looks like this: agree among themselves not to compete too hard, get an antitrust waiver to make it legal, and while they're at it, get Washington - under the veneer of "safety" - to kneecap Chinese competitors because only "democratic" models can be in this "safe pacing" club.
I'm not even exaggerating: Dario pretty much writes this explicitly.
There are 3 steps to his plan and step 2 is literally: "Frontier AI companies within democratic countries coordinate to establish common safety standards as well as limits on the rate of unchecked AI progress" -> the "unchecked AI progress" that would need "limits" is simply AI progress that happens outside their agreement. Another word for it is simply competition 🤷♂️
He also explicitly writes that "a key part of pacing within democracies is to keep democracies’ AI lead over autocracies as large as possible." You can't possibly be clearer than this...

An alternative hypothesis:
- model performance is plateauing
- compute is getting much more expensive
- AI data centers are massively unpopular
- slowing down AI development is a way to explain slowing progress, reduce spending, and try to regain some goodwill.
- This is an effort to save the IPO not humanity.
We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

We genuinely need a white collar revolt
Bank of America Vice President Erin Piacenti, 32, was killed after police say a knife-wielding woman randomly stabbed two people in Times Square. The suspect, identified as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, allegedly first stabbed a 68-year-old man near Seventh Avenue before attacking Piacenti moments later.
Police say officers confronted Cisneros after witnesses flagged them down, repeatedly ordering her to drop two knives. Officials say Tasers failed, and officers opened fire when she advanced toward them; Cisneros later died at Bellevue Hospital.
