Our group, @RenewEurope , is calling on European leaders to take urgent action, as the restrictions imposed by @Starlink are jeopardizing Ukraine’s defense. We must not leave it up to @elonmusk and Donald Trump @POTUS to decide whether Ukraine will be able to defend itself or not.
It is time for Europe to step in and ensure that Kyiv has access to satellite communications and that European capabilities can be deployed to fill the gap.
Digital sovereignty is a security imperative. 🇪🇺🇺🇦

Well-known Ukrainian military aerial reconnaissance specialist Oleksandr "Serg Marco" Karpiuk writes on Facebook:
"...Starlink is a civilian communications system. And SpaceX is responsible for its civilian use. Standard Starlink terminals currently have a default speed limit of 22 m/s.
To enable flight at speeds above 22 m/s, Ukraine signed contracts for Starshield, which is overseen by the Pentagon. This is already a military system, with Starlink terminals that offer greater functionality, although the accounts are considerably more expensive.
And it was the Pentagon that did two things in a single day: restricted intelligence sharing and changed the parameters of Starshield accounts.
This was a decision by the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth. Clearly on Trump's orders...."
Maybe this is the key to understanding what exactly happened.

Unlike a week ago, this time Russia is attacking ships on the edge of Bulgaria's territorial waters: 13-15 nautical miles from the Black Sea shoreline. It was 100 miles last time. Again vessels carrying Ukrainian grain from Romania to Turkey.

EU Foreign Ministers just adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex.
This is the single largest expansion of our sanctions list since Russia started its war.
Europe is again showing a united front.
More than half are connected to the production chain for ballistic missiles.
We are making it significantly harder, slower and more expensive for Russia to produce the weapons it uses to kill Ukrainians.

🇪🇺🇨🇳 EU Socialists totally split on China
An almost perfect 50/50 split materialised in the @TheProgressives group in today’s vote on EU-China relations.
🇩🇪🇫🇷🇸🇪🇩🇰🇫🇮🇳🇴 delegations pushed for a tougher stance on China.
🇪🇸🇵🇹🇮🇹🇷🇴 Socialists chose to abstain. 👇

You know, @POLITICOEurope,not every piece of news needs to be spiced up. What is the point of using words such as “rushed” and “plum,” or implying that EU delegations would be spared any potential budget cuts? I, for one, would appreciate less tabloidy, sensationalist journalism.
European Commission officials have rushed to apply for plum jobs soon opening up in the EU’s diplomatic network.
For them, leaving Brussels amid looming budget cuts could be more appealing than ever.

Based on the information collected by the Estonian Internal Security Service @kaitsepolitsei we can conclude with certainty that the arson attack on Milrem Robotics premises that took place on the night of 14–15 august in Tallinn was an act of sabotage ordered by the special services of the Russian Federation.
Such actions are absolutely unacceptable. In response, the @MFAestonia will today summon Russia’s Chargé d’affaires.
The perpetrators have been apprehended and no longer pose a threat to our national security. Estonia is a difficult environment for Russia to carry out such actions because we act decisively and swiftly to protect our state.
This act of sabotage is part of Russia’s broader campaign across Europe, aimed at intimidating us and weakening our support for Ukraine.
Our response will be the opposite. We will increase both our support for Ukraine and the pressure on Russia to end its aggression.
Let’s not lose focus and stay the course, because Russia’s actions are a clear indication that our collective exertion of pressure is working.

Russia is quietly rewriting its drone-war playbook, and the Geran-4/5 shift is the clearest evidence yet. For over a year, the workhorse was the Geran-2, a slow, propeller-driven Shahed derivative. That era is ending. Russia has already halted production of the jet-powered Geran-3 and pivoted its lines entirely toward two new models: the Geran-4 and Geran-5. Output is now around 3,000 of these jet drones a month, alongside roughly 2,800 propeller Geran-2s — a scale that dwarfs anything seen earlier in the war.
The two models solve different problems. The Geran-4 keeps the familiar delta-wing Shahed silhouette but reinforces the airframe and swaps in a Chinese Telefly turbojet. That pushes cruise speed to 350–500 km/h, with bursts to 500+, range out to 850–960 km, and a 50–90 kg warhead. The Geran-5 is a different animal entirely: it drops the delta shape for a cylindrical, missile-like fuselage, weighs 850 kg at takeoff, hits 450–600 km/h, carries a 90 kg warhead, and reaches nearly 1,000 km — functionally a cruise missile sold at drone prices.
What's really changing isn't just hardware but the doctrine. Three shifts stand out:
- Instead of hugging the ground, Geran-4/5 are now flying at 5–7 km during cruise phases, well above the engagement envelope of many mobile air-defense teams and cheap interceptor drones Ukraine has been fielding. Combined with jet speeds three times faster than piston Shaheds, this is straining Ukraine's interceptor programs, which were only catching up to the slower Geran-2 threat.
- Both new variants add thermal imaging, AI-based target correction, Russian anti-jamming antennas, and Chinese mesh-radio networking — a real leap from the rudimentary GPS/inertial guidance of earlier Gerans. That reduces dependence on satellite navigation exactly where Ukrainian EW is strongest.
- Russia has roughly halved per-unit cost to $50,000–70,000 by 3D-printing turbine parts and streamlining Alabuga's production lines — meaning the faster, harder-to-kill drone is now also the cheaper one to mass-produce.
There's also a proliferation angle worth flagging: the Financial Times reports Iran has asked Moscow to supply Geran-5s for its own conflict with Israel and the US, essentially requesting the upgraded version of the platform it originally gave Russia. And Ukraine's HUR says some Geran-5s can be armed with R-73 air-to-air missiles and even air-launched from Su-25s, hinting at an anti-aircraft/anti-drone role beyond strike missions.
The strategic reach is expanding too. A Telegraph investigation found at least 59 new Russian drone launch rails near NATO's borders, roughly 20 long enough for Geran-4/5, putting Warsaw within range. That geography helps explain the recent incursions into Romanian and Moldovan airspace — including the drone that nearly intercepted Zelensky's aircraft — where open-source analysts identified the intruder as a Geran-4.
Russia isn't just iterating on the Shahed anymore, but converting a cheap, disposable saturation weapon into a faster, smarter, longer-range strike system that blurs the line with cruise missiles, while making it harder and more expensive for Ukraine (and potentially NATO's eastern flank) to keep up.

France pulled off the fastest large-scale power sector decarbonisation in history. After the 1973 oil shock, it replaced a fossil-fuelled grid with nuclear power in only 15 years. Electricity is cheaper and cleaner than it is in Germany. The current challenge for France is to renew its ageing reactor fleet as quickly as it built the original one.

Parliament adopts a resolution condemning drone incursions and airspace violations of EU territory. They are not isolated incidents but an integral part of Russia's broader strategy of intimidation of the EU and its allies, say MEPs.

The drone explosion in the port of Constanța shows that Russia’s war is increasingly spilling over into EU territory.
I spoke with Foreign Minister @oana_toiu about today's developments and expressed the EU’s full solidarity with Romania.
The ultimate responsibility for what happened rests squarely with Russia. As President Zelenskyy told Putin in an open letter yesterday: Moscow can stop this war any day.
Next week, EU Defence Ministers will discuss how to further ramp up our support for Ukraine and increase the EU’s own defence readiness.
