This headline is misleading. What John Fitzgerald argues here is that continued growth of data centres in Ireland carries more costs than benefits. A simple and important argument that contradicts government policy. irishtimes.com/business/econ…

Data centres have become a key *material* focal point in the struggle over AI, monopoly tech, economic justice, work and the environment. Describing this as a 'culture war' is lazy journalism.

Why isn’t this front page news??? There’s no gender pay gap! It’s just a lot of hocus pocus and individual choices. Could it be because to reach this conclusion you have to ignore minor details like what and who the GPG is actually measuring?

Two months tomorrow, new EU law ending much of the secrecy around pay comes into force. Government has yet to publish the necessary legislation to bring Irish law up to standard. “Call me a cynic,” says Bambrick “but I think we’ll still be talking about this in a year’s time.”

The average employee in Dublin earns €49,500. A newly qualified teacher earns under €42,500. A nurse just over €37,000 and a garda less than €39,000, if not doing shift work. None of them meet the (€56,000) minimum salary requirement for a one-bedroom ‘affordable’ apartment.
Applications for 99 affordable purchase homes in Dublin will open later this month. One-bed apartments will cost between €248k and €332k; two-bed apartments will cost between €320k and €414k and three-bed houses will cost between €378k and €473k. jrnl.ie/6870044

It got drowned out in all the good news from last night, but Boston Mayor Michelle Wu became the youngest person to be reelected in the city's history. She ran unopposed because her opponent--Patriots owner Bob Kraft's son--withdrew a few months ago after realizing he had no hope of winning.

Out of the €8m written off last year, €4.5m related to the State pension. While overpayments (money going to people not entitled to it) at any level are unacceptable, overpayments represent less than 0.5% of DSP’s annual budget, the vast bulk of which is recouped.
